Dickens used him as a model for Jaggers, his character from Great Expectations. Here Harmer seeks to expose what he saw as a miscarriage of justice, as the two men were convicted through flimsy evidence and questionable witness testimony. The trial quite controversial, and the subsequent execution over over 40,000 people, 40 trampled to death during the proceedings.
