Der 23jährige Jurastudent Andreas Dippold ist angeklagt, als Hauslehrer seine beiden Schüler körperlich so sehr gezüchtigt zu haben, daß einer der Jungen an den Folgen der Mißhandlung starb. Der Hauslehrer beharrt auf der Rechtmäßigkeit seines Tuns, weil sich seine Zöglinge dem Laster der Onanie hingegeben hätten. Die großbürgerlichen Eltern der Vater steht an der Spitze der Deutschen Bank setzen alle Einflußhebel in Bewegung, um den Angeklagten als gemeingefährlichen Sexualstraftäter hinzustellen. Das Gericht bewahrt sich seine eigene Sicht und verurteilt Dippold zu acht Jahren Zuchthaus. Es folgt ein Aufschrei der Empörung, Prozeßbeobachter und die breite Öffentlichkeit sind ob des aus ihrer Sicht zu milden Urteils entsetzt. Eine erregte Auseinandersetzung in den Zeitungen des Kaiserreichs beginnt, an der sich auch angesehene Publizisten wie Maximilian Harden beteiligen. Gestützt auf zahlreiche Quellen und die Gerichtsakten erzählt Michael Hagner zunächst die Geschichte des Hauslehrers, der Jungen und der Eltern bis zum Prozeß. Im Anschluß daran untersucht er die Praktiken der Justiz, der Medizin und der Medien, die aus dem vielschichtigen Geschehen einen exemplarischen, nur noch partiell mit den realen Vorgängen übereinstimmenden Fall konstruieren einen Skandal, der zu heftigen Debatten in Pädagogik, Kriminologie, Psychiatrie und Sexualwissenschaft führt und am Ende als klassisches Beispiel von Erziehersadismus (»Dippoldismus«) in den Lehrbüchern abgelegt wird.
