Scarce book detailing the adventures of the author who rowed in the Olympics for England and engaged in endeavors including poaching King Alfonso's ibex in Spain, train-hopping as a hobo in Canada, collecting bird eggs in Iceland for the British Museum and many others. Includes many illustrations. The book has sound hinges and does not lean. There is a light smudge on the book's first page, others are clean with no creases, marks, wrinkles or stains. Very slight soiling to exterior covers and spine. None of the book's cover corners are bumped. There is slight rub wear to top and bottom edges of the spine, cover corner tips. The gilt lettering on the spine is still clean and bright. The dust jacket is not price-clipped. It is moderately soiled, has some minor wrinkles and wear to top and bottom edges including some tiny chips and tears. A clear archival sleeve has been put on the dust jacket to keep it looking great. (Note: Photos may show a flash reflection.) PayPal always welcome.     8vo. x, 292 pp. Photo frontisp., numerous photo plates, 4 maps. Blue publisher's cloth, gilt lettering on spine, w/ d.j. Art Deco cover art of ice flows reminiscent of Rockwell Kent, NF/NF copy. First American edition of this remarkable exploration narrative tracing the journey of over 1500 miles across the Arctic of Northwest Greenland, with two fellow explorers, and his experiences equipped with only the clothing, and tools he acquired amongst the Indigenous Peoples communities. Haig-Thomas (1908-1944) was a British ornithologist who had competed in the 1932 Olympic Games, and from 1937-1938 led this exploration, and would later be killed in action during the D-Day landings June 6, 1944. It should be noted this volume does use the Hodder & Stoughton sheets, it includes the very scarce American dustjacket, different from the photographic cover art of the British edition.
