It is also a book about liberty. A crucial foundational question concerns the class of beings to whom equal treatment is owed. The distinct claims of idiots, children, foetuses and animals are examined and the importance of perfectionist and metaphysical considerations is drawn out. The author argues that perfectionism is needed both to provide the foundations of egalitarianism and to work out its liberal implications. The view of liberals such as Rawls, Dworkin and Nozick that the liberal state must be neutral between different conceptions of the good life is shown to be untenable. Egalitarianism is related to other moral considerations which have claims on our allegiance, such as the claims of our family, of our ideals and commitments, and of utility. The author argues that the doctrine of equal right to respect sets the contraints within which these other considerations must operate. The views of several classical and contemporary authors such as Mill, Rawls, and Parfit are examined but the primary orientation of the book is towards the development of the author's own views.
