Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In Romanform beschreibt Schumanns Reise Kindheit und frühe Jugend des Autors bis zu seiner Emigration 1936 im Alter von 12 Jahren. Hal Marienthal wurde 1923 in Frankfurt geboren, die Familie zog jedoch bald nach Dortmund. Als seine Mutter 1929 stirbt, bringt der Vater ihn und seine Schwester in einem jüdischen Waisenhaus in Paderborn unter. Der Junge hält es dort nicht lange aus und läuft weg. Drei Jahre streift er allein durchs Land, schläft im Wald und in Heuschobern, findet gelegentlich Obdach bei fremden Familien. Als seine Situation wegen des wachsenden Antisemitismus immer schwieriger wird, meldet er sich bei einem Onkel im Hunsrück und kehrt schließlich zu seinem Vater nach Dortmund zurück. Nach der Machtergreifung der Nazis wird der Vater als aktives KPD-Mitglied wiederholt verhaftet und gefoltert. Auch für Hal (der damals noch Helmut hieß) wird das Leben gefährlich, denn er verteilt für die KPD Flugblätter und klebt Plakate. 1935 muß er mehrfach untertauchen, er versteckt sich in der Kanalisation, in aufgelassenen Bergwerkschächten. Gleichzeitig läuft sein Visumantrag für die USA, wo Verwandte seines Vaters ihn adoptieren wollen. Um seine Ausreisepapiere zu bekommen, muß er allein nach Stuttgart reisen. Zu dieser Zeit fahndet bereits die Gestapo nach ihm, so daß seine Flucht nur knapp gelingt und nur durch die mutige Hilfe mehrerer Menschen, denen er auf seiner Reise begegnet. Nur selten gerät ein autobiographischer Text zum atemberaubenden Thriller. Der Standard, Wien.
