HALE, Cicely Bertha (1884-1981): [WSPU] Fourth Annual Report (1910), signed Fourth Annual Report of the National Women's Social and Political Union. Including Cash Statement and Subscription List for the Year ended February 28th, 1910, and Accounts of The Woman's Press, January 1st-December 31st, 1909. London: The Woman's Press, 1910. Quarto (250 x 150 mm). 56 pages plus wrappers. Original printed wrappers. Staples perished, contents loose as a result. A vertical crease to the upper portion of the front wrapper, with some light marking and handling wear, but overall a well-preserved and complete, very good copy. Signed to the upper wrapper by Cicely Hale, a member of the WSPU and prominent worker within the organisation. Hale is listed within the subscription lists in the present report and is known to have been closely involved in the administrative and informational work of the Union, including the production and circulation of its printed material. Hale had involvement in typesetting the WSPU's newspaper, The Suffragette, as well as circulars and it stands to reason, the annual report. The report provides a detailed account of the activities of the WSPU during a critical phase of the militant campaign, including statements of policy ('What Women Demand'), accounts of demonstrations, arrests, imprisonment, and forcible feeding, as well as financial statements and extensive lists of subscribers and donors. Copies with direct association to identified members of the Union are uncommon. Signed by Author(s).
