Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. WOMEN'S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION (WSPU). Votes for Women. The National Women's Social & Political Union, 4 Clement's Inn, Strand, W.C. [London: St. Clements Press Ltd., Kingsway, n.d., c. 1909-1911.] Single bifolium (four pages), printed in blue and black, folding to approximately 230 × 140 mm; vertical and horizontal fold lines as issued. Some creasing, edge wear and light toning; small nicks at fold; entirely legible. Good. Official WSPU song-sheet containing a series of suffrage songs set to well-known tunes, including 'The Women's Marseillaise' (F. E. M. Macaulay), 'Rise Up Women' and 'In the Morning' (Theodora Mills), 'Women of England' (tune: Men of Harlech), and 'As I Came Through Holloway' (tune: The Keel Row). The latter makes explicit reference to the imprisonment of suffragettes in Holloway, while other verses refer to storming the House of Commons and to prison as part of the militant campaign. "We stormed the House of Commons with our little band so true, and we frightened all the statesmen till they trembled through and through. They clapped us into prison and we gladly went for you, and the cause goes marching on. Glory glory hallalujah, glory glory hallalujah, glory glory hallalujah and the cause goes marching on!" Printed at St. Clements Press and published from the WSPU headquarters at Clement?s Inn, the sheet belongs to the height of the Union's militant phase, when music and adapted popular airs were used at meetings, demonstrations and processions to foster solidarity and public visibility. Such ephemeral printed material was produced for active use and was not intended to survive; examples in complete form are increasingly scarce.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. WOMEN?S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL UNION (WSPU). Why Women Protest at Liberal Meetings. [London: The Woman's Press, c.1909-1910]. Single sheet broadside, 190 x 250 mm. old fold lines, with light creasing and minor handling wear; a little surface marking; overall about about very good. A rare WSPU propaganda broadside setting out the justification for militant disruption of Liberal Party meetings at the height of the suffrage campaign. The text directly addresses the failure of the Liberal government to introduce a women's suffrage bill despite widespread parliamentary support, and explicitly frames protest and confrontation as a necessary continuation of earlier struggles for enfranchisement. The sheet quotes a Liberal MP in partial defence of suffragette tactics and closes with a clear statement that agitation will continue until the vote is secured. Surviving broadsides of this kind printed by the WSPU are uncommon.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. HALE, Cicely Bertha (1884-1981): [WSPU] Fourth Annual Report (1910), signed Fourth Annual Report of the National Women's Social and Political Union. Including Cash Statement and Subscription List for the Year ended February 28th, 1910, and Accounts of The Woman's Press, January 1st-December 31st, 1909. London: The Woman's Press, 1910. Quarto (250 x 150 mm). 56 pages plus wrappers. Original printed wrappers. Staples perished, contents loose as a result. A vertical crease to the upper portion of the front wrapper, with some light marking and handling wear, but overall a well-preserved and complete, very good copy. Signed to the upper wrapper by Cicely Hale, a member of the WSPU and prominent worker within the organisation. Hale is listed within the subscription lists in the present report and is known to have been closely involved in the administrative and informational work of the Union, including the production and circulation of its printed material. Hale had involvement in typesetting the WSPU's newspaper, The Suffragette, as well as circulars and it stands to reason, the annual report. The report provides a detailed account of the activities of the WSPU during a critical phase of the militant campaign, including statements of policy ('What Women Demand'), accounts of demonstrations, arrests, imprisonment, and forcible feeding, as well as financial statements and extensive lists of subscribers and donors. Copies with direct association to identified members of the Union are uncommon. Signed by Author(s).

[Women's Rights] F.W. Pethick Lawrence. "Is the English Law Unjust to Women?" The Women's Social and Political Union. No. 55. No date, c. 1912. 2 pages (1 sheet). 10 x 7.5 inches. "The following statement with regard to the position of women under the law provides a complete answer to the assertion frequently made b Anti-Suffragists that 'women have no grievances.'" The essay lists the many ways in which women and girls are mistreated throughout their lives: socially, educationally, economically, and legally. "Finally, women, though fulfilling all the duties of citizenship, are debarred from the parliamentary franchise solely on the ground of sex." Frederick Pethick-Lawrence and his wife Emmeline were members of the WSPU from 1907 until 1912. The WSPU was the most radical suffrage activist group in the UK and was known for its militant (and sometimes violent) tactics. Light creases from handling. 1/4" closed tear along top right edge; 1/2" closed tear along center left edge. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. In good to very good condition.
