No place, no date, circa 1900, sized about 8 x 10.5 inches, on heavy plate paper, with facsimile signature, engraved by Bather, very sharp, clean, and bright. The subject was born October 15, 1830, Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, to John and Elizabeth Hall Hodgson. He married three times, to the following women: Alice Clayton, who died in about 2 years, Sarah Rich, who died in 1865, and Wilhelmina Pierson Dennison, in 1872, with whom he had a son, Walter Dennison Hodgson.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB: 'In 1848 he was articled to the staunchly Quaker P. B. Alley, then in partnership with Richard Lane, the leading neo-classical architect of Manchester. In 1853 his education was completed with a ten-month tour of France, Italy, and Germany, after which he set up in practice as an architect in Manchester.' (Waterhouse's first success would come with his winning design for the Manchester assize courts in 1859.) 1p, 12mo. On the first leaf of a grey-paper bifolium. In good condition. Folded for postage. Addressed to 'Thomas Haigh Esq:' and signed 'A Waterhouse'. Begins: 'Dear Sir, / The enclosed came this morning in an envelope addressed to me, but has been evidently misdirected.' He is sending off three drawings, 'completing the set of general drawings for house at Keston'. He gives details of a date when he proposes to visit the site. 'Are you likely to be over there soon, may I ask?'.

Good, on lightly-aged paper, in worn envelope. He informs him that his edition of Plutarch's 'Parallel Lives' was published by Chapman & Hall. 'I hear that they have lately published a new Edition: but old Mr Chapman the head of the firm is dead, [Edward Chapman (1804-1880)] & since that I have heard nothing of the firm which has now I believe been made into a limited Company.' He ends by saying that he does not know 'Mr Freeman's address' exactly.

Sneyd-Kinnersley is the headmaster who is alleged to have subjected a naked seven-year-old Winston Churchill to repeated beatings. 3pp, 12mo. With mourning border. Letterhead (no doubt designed by Waterhouse himself) in characteristic style. On grey paper. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded once for postage. Good expansive signature 'A Waterhouse', and the letter written in a stylish hand. Addressed to 'The Rev: H. W Sneyd Kinnersley'. He begins by stating that he 'called at Aldin House this afternoon in the hope of seeing you'. Had he done so, he would have 'troubled you with a question about my little boy's work. / I fancy that having risen in his place in the School he has missed somehow some of the Steps which he might have taken on his way to his present position.' He asks SK to 'point out to me in what you Consider him most deficient', so that he can 'get him to do a little work during the holidays to make him acquainted with what he has missed.'.

From the papers of John Blackburne, who has marked in pencil an advertisement of 'TIMBER | TO BE SOLD BY AUCTION, | At the house of Thomas Green, in the Little-Corn-Market in Warrington, in the county of Lancashire, upon Wednesday the 3d day of March, 1790, at six o'clock in the evening, subject to such conditions as will be then and there produced.' Three lots are given: first, 370 oak trees on Blackburne's estate at 'Risley, within the parish of Winwick [.] in the occupation of Peter Wilkinson'; second, 577 oak trees at Risley, 'upon an estate in the occupation of George Rylands'; third, 25 ash trees, on estates in the occupation of John Eden and George Rylands. 'The tenants upon the estates will shew the Timber; and, for further particulars, apply to Mr. Phipp, steward to John Blackburne, Esq. or to Mr. Maire, attorney, in Warrington.'.
