Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Mardon, Son & Hall, Limited (Caxton Works), Bristol. Published May 1947. Wraps, 7 pp.; 17 cm; letterpress text with printed marginal keyword headings, a double-rule border and typographic corner ornaments to the front wrapper. In Very Good condition. Kraft-brown paper wraps printed in black, staple bound; front wrapper toned with some soiling and staining, printer's reference 633 at foot; interior leaves toned but clean, no tears, no writing.Internal staff rulebook issued to employees of Mardon, Son & Hall, the Bristol printing and packaging house that became a subsidiary of the Imperial Tobacco Company in 1902. Mardon's had pioneered the modern cigarette card in 1889, printing W.D. & H.O. Wills advertisements on the stiffener cards of cigarette packets, and went on to produce the bulk of Imperial Tobacco's cigarette and playing cards; by the 1930s the firm employed more than 5,000 people across some thirteen Bristol factories. Dated May 1947, this pamphlet records the firm's conditions of employment in the immediate post-war years under the Attlee government, a period of full employment and strong organised labour. Its thirty-four numbered rules cover hours, notice, absence, safety, and factory discipline, framed throughout by the print trade's chapel system: Rule 1 provides for working hours to be altered only in consultation with Mardon's Federated Chapel (the works union branch), and the closing rule ties interpretation of the rules to the arrangements between the British Federation of Master Printers (B.F.M.P.) and the Printing and Kindred Trades Federation (P. & K.T.F.). A scarce piece of Bristol industrial ephemera bridging the histories of commercial printing, the tobacco trade, and British trade unionism.

He is glad that Sir Thomas appreciates 'the seriousness of our position', and the reasons for asking Hatchards 'to release Mr. Edgeley to us for approximately six months in order to enable him to concentrate mainly upon the rehabilitation of this business'. Not a minor matter; according to one source the firm had '2,217 branches and 1.3 million books in circulation by 1934'.

Full leather. Condition: Near fine. Limited Edition. Octavo, [two volumes], xxviii, [4], 470pp, [4]; vii, [3], 534pp, [8]. Publisher's full calf, decoratively stamped in gilt on covers. Title in gilt on spines, raised bands. All edges gilt, silk bookmark in each volume. The text of the Volair Edition follows the first octavo edition, published by J.T. Bowen (1848-1850). The Volair Edition was edited by Barry L. Kessel, Philip R. St. Clair, and Murray R. Bowes. Housed in the publisher's matching cloth slipcase, light shelf wear to side panels, solid hinges. Considered one of the most important collections of Native American imagery ever compiled, History of the Indian Tribes of North America was the life work of Colonel Thomas McKenney. This work was originally published in 20 folio parts between 1836 and 1844. The first octavo edition was published in 1848-1850. Several additional octavo editions were published into the 1870s, all of which are highly desirable today. In 1865, the year the three-volume set appeared, a fire at the Smithsonian destroyed most of the original portraits by Charles Bird King, thus making this work the only record of the likenesses of many of these Indian leaders. History of the Indian Tribes of North America by Thomas L. McKenney and James Hall, published in 1978 by Volair Limited. (illustrator).
