Der Kurs wird im Informatik-Studium an der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg als Grundlagenkurs angeboten. Rechnerarchitektur ist ein zentrales Gebiet der Informatik, das alle vier Bereiche dieser Wissenschaft umfasst. Ziel ist es, die physischen Elemente einer Rechenanlage (Hardware) durch geeignete Anordnungen optimal miteinander zu verbinden, um spezifische Anwendungen zu realisieren. Das Zusammenspiel der Einzelteile wird weitgehend durch das Betriebssystem überwacht, weshalb auch die Software in die Betrachtung einfließt. Zudem werden durch Methoden der Informatik aus der Abstraktion realer Rechnerkonfigurationen und den anfallenden Aufgabenprofilen optimale Problemlösungen entwickelt. Rechnerarchitektur befasst sich nicht nur mit der Bestandsaufnahme bestehender Modelle, sondern auch mit deren Kategorisierung und kritischen Bewertung nach verschiedenen Kriterien. Schließlich wird der Entwurfsprozess von Rechenanlagen bei gegebener Aufgabenstellung beschrieben, um praktische Hilfen für die einzelnen Entwurfsentscheidungen zu bieten.
