Although no individual artist was as accomplished as the great French masters, a tradition of integrating pictures with the text emerged. The fact that this tradition was not pursued elsewhere, except in Venice, fascinated the late Hanns Hammelmann. He devoted years of patient research to unravelling the life-stories and works of the artists who specialized in book illustration. In his lifetime Mr. Hammelmann published articles on several of the better-known artists including Fuseli, Vanderbank, Stothard, and the prolific Taylor family.
