Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Letters of Anne Gilchrist and Walt Whitman is a collection of personal correspondence between two literary figures of the 19th century. Their letters span from 1876 to 1885 and reveal a deep intellectual and emotional connection between the two writers. The letters discuss a range of topics, including literature, politics, and personal struggles. Softcover, bound in cream-colored printed self-wrappers. [4] pages, numbered 15 through 18. The edges of the pages are very slightly darkened. Near fine. RARE. "Walt Whitman Fellowship Papers…: Second Year: 7. Philadelphia, November, 1895". The successful Philadelphia lawyer Thomas Biggs Harned (1851-1921) was one of Whitman's three literary executors. The brother-in-law of Horace Traubel, Harned was acquainted with Whitman for 20 years and was in nearly daily contact with the poet in the last years of Whitman's life. Whitman frequently dined at Harned's well-appointed home in Camden, a social center frequently visited by prominent people where the poet shared meals and drink while entertaining his companions and Harned's three children. Harned served as a speaker and pallbearer at Whitman's funeral and funded the construction of Whitman's mausoleum.

Essays and poetic tributes by the editors and others, including Whitman himself. Perhaps most interesting are the extracts from letters written by Horace Traubel (1858-1919) to Whitman's friends in Bri…tain. Traubel, not well known today, was an American poet, essayist, magazine publisher, and writer closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Many Canadians will be more familiar with the name of Richard Bucke, broadminded Superintendent of London's Insane Asylum. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life of Whitman. Edition of 1000 copies of which this is no. 559.
