This book presents over 70 letters between Walt Whitman, the great American poet, and Anne Gilchrist, an English writer and ardent admirer of his work. Their correspondence spanned over a decade, beginning in 1871 when Gilchrist wrote to Whitman to express her admiration for his poetry. The letters provide a unique insight into Whitman's personal life and creative process. They also shed light on the literary and social climate of the time, as well as the evolving relationship between Whitman and Gilchrist. The book offers valuable insights into the ways in which Whitman's work challenged and reshaped the literary landscape of his time and continues to influence readers and writers today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - The Letters of Anne Gilchrist and Walt Whitman is a collection of personal correspondence between two literary figures of the 19th century. Their letters span from 1876 to 1885 and reveal a deep intellectual and emotional connection between the two writers. The letters discuss a range of topics, including literature, politics, and personal struggles. They also reveal the impact that Whitman's poetry had on Gilchrist's life, as she credits him with helping her find a sense of purpose and meaning. The successful Philadelphia lawyer Thomas Biggs Harned (1851-1921) was one of Whitman's three literary executors. The brother-in-law of Horace Traubel, Harned was acquainted with Whitman for 20 years and was in nearly daily contact with the poet in the last years of Whitman's life. Whitman frequently dined at Harned's well-appointed home in Camden, a social center frequently visited by prominent people where the poet shared meals and drink while entertaining his companions and Harned's three children. Harned served as a speaker and pallbearer at Whitman's funeral and funded the construction of Whitman's mausoleum.

Published by David McKay, Philadelphia, 1893
Hardcover. Condition: Good. x, 452, [2] p. 25 cm. Black cloth. Worn corners and spine head. Hinges tender. Roughened page edges. Essays and poetic tributes by the editors and others, including Whitman himself. Perhaps most interesting are the extracts from letters written by Horace Traubel (1858-1919) to Whitman's friends in Britain. Traubel, not well known today, was an American poet, essayist, magazine publisher, and writer closely associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. Many Canadians will be more familiar with the name of Richard Bucke, broadminded Superintendent of London's Insane Asylum. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the life of Whitman. Edition of 1000 copies of which this is no. 559.
