Harold Macmillan served as the British Prime Minister from 1957-1963. A protégé of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, Macmillan served as the Foreign Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer under Churchill's successor, Anthony Eden. Upon Eden's resignation, Macmillan succeeded him as the Leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister. During his tenure, he rebuilt the "Special Relationship" with the United States that had been damaged by the Suez Crisis. In retirement, Macmillan published a six-volume autobiography, which included: Winds of Change 1914-1939, The Blast of War 1939-1945, Tides of Fortune 1945-1955, Riding the Storm 1956-1959, Pointing the Way 1959-1961 and At the End of the Day 1961-1963. His final publication, War Diaries: Politics and War in the Mediterranean, January 1943-May 1945 was a commercial success. Upon his death in 1986, he was the longest-lived prime minister in British history. Signed first edition, second printing of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan's memoir, The Blast of War 1939-1945. (illustrator). Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Hardcover with DJ. Bound in maroon cloth with gold lettering on the spine. Binding good and tight with some dustiness to the foreedges but little else to distract. White DJ is faded towards tan, with some parts further along than others, but complete and unoffensive.…Title page dated 1939. Copyright page dated 1938 and 1939. This is the 1939 reprint (2nd printing). 382 pages. This copy has inscription on the front endpaper 'With good wishes of the author + publisher, Harold Macmillan.' Original ownership name of J.C. Harsch written in red above (and separated from) the Macmillan inscription. Joseph Harsh was a journalist and war correspondent for CBS and the Christian Science Monitor from the Great Depression until his death in the 1990s. Macmillan would serve as Prime Minister in the 1950s, but at the time this book was published, he was publisher and member of Parliament. This important work argues for a centrist approach (the front cover shows images of both hammer and sickle and fascist bundle), which was still considered feasible in the late 1930s. A nice association copy of a scarce and influential book. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book (although they sometimes get right). Signed by Author(s).
