An encyclopaedic history of Dover Harbour, from the primitive harbour, of the earliest times through its development in the seventeenth century, transport to and from, enlargement in the mid-Victorian age and international communications, and through the First and Second World Wars, up to the 1960s, with a final chapter on threats and expansion (inc the Channel Tunnel). Appendices include a list of steamships working Dover regularly from 1821 to 1976, and members and officials of some selected Harbour Boards 1606 to 1979.
