Das Besond…ere und Innovative dieses mehr als 170 Kapitel umfassenden Kräuterbuchs, das der in Padua ausgebildete Leibarzt der bayerischen Herzöge Albrecht III. und Siegmund noch vor der Jahrhundertmitte zusammenstellte, sind die in sämtlichen Handschriften überlieferten Abbildungen der Drogen, die einen integralen Bestandteil des Werkes darstellen. Das Gliederungsgerüst für die Kapitelabfolge des Kräuterbuchs bildet der alphabetisch geordnete Abschnitt über die Kräuter aus dem 'Buch der Natur' des Regensburger Domherrn Konrad von Megenberg ( 1374), den Hartlieb fast zur Gänze wörtlich übernahm. Ergänzend dazu bereicherte er sein Werk mit zusätzlichen 76 Drogenkapiteln, die er in der Regel entsprechend der alphabetischen Ordnung jeweils blockartig am Ende eines Buchstaben-Abschnitts einfügte. Nur für eine kleine Zahl dieser Zusatzkapitel konnten Vorlagen eruiert werden. Dennoch muss dahingestellt bleiben, ob die restlichen Kapitel Hartliebs originärer Beitrag zu diesem Kräuterbuch darstellen; größer ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass auch sie einer uns bislang nicht bekannten Quelle entstammen. Abweichend vom alphabetischen Gliederungsprinzip verfuhr Hartlieb mit den Eingangskapiteln, die tierische Drogen zum Inhalt haben. Zwar griff er auch hier auf Konrads von Megenberg Natur-Enzyklopädie zurück, exzerpierte jedoch nur die medizinisch relevanten Abschnitte der entsprechenden Kapitel über die Vierfüßler. Es wurde zu einem der meistgelesenen und wirkungsmächtigsten Bücher des späten Mittelalters in deutscher Sprache. Die vorliegende Studie, die methodisch der überlieferungsgeschichtlichen Forschungsrichtung verpflichtet ist, charakterisiert die verschiedenen Textfassungen, diskutiert mögliche Autorintentionen, beschreibt und analysiert die reiche handschriftliche und drucktechnische Überlieferung (80 Handschriften und Fragmente, 6 Inkunabeldrucke) und dokumentiert die Wirkungsgeschichte anhand eines quantitativ etwa ebenso großen Überlieferungscorpus. Die daraus gewonnenen Daten lassen erkennen, daß das BdN in der Hauptsache im süd- und südwestdeutschen Raum verbreitet war; weltliche Besitzer und Benutzer, Vertreter des (Hoch-)Adels und des Patriziats dominieren, die Rezeption durch den Klerus ist deutlich geringer. Die Kontextüberlieferung des BdN, aber auch einzelner Teile und Kapitel bestätigt, daß seine Gebrauchsfunktion primär im Bereich praktischer Lebenshilfe lag. Damit löste sie sich aber von den Intentionen seines Autors, der nicht nur Sachinformation über Gottes Schöpfung bieten wollte, sondern dem auch wesentlich an der Vermittlung ihres zeichenhaften Sinns gelegen war. Hartlieb, who was educated in Padua and was…personal physician to the Bavarian dukes Albrecht III and Siegmund, put his herbal together before the middle of the century. What is special and innovative about this work, which encompasses more than 170 chapters, are the illustrations of the drugs. They are present in all the extant manuscripts and form an integral part of the work.The structural framework for the sequence of chapters in the herbal is formed by the alphabetically arranged section about herbs from the "Buch der Natur" by the Regensburg cathedral canon Konrad of Megenberg (+ 1374), whose text Hartlieb took over word-for-word almost in its entirety. In addition, he enriched his work with 76 additional chapters on drugs, arranged as a rule alphabetically in a block at the end of each letter of the alphabet. Sources have been found for only a small number of these additional chapters. Nonetheless, it must remain an open question as to whether the remaining chapters are an original contribution by Hartlieb to this herbal; it is more probable that they are derived from a source that has not yet been identified. Hartlieb departed from the alphabetical principle of arrangement in his opening chapters, which have drugs derived from animals as their content. Here Konrad also turned to the encyclopedia of nature by Konrad of Megenberg, but in this case he excerpted only the medically relevant portions of the corresponding chapters on four-footed animals.The first critical edition of this text on the basis of the entire tradition known to us today fulfills a long-recognized gap in the literature. Until now there have only been reprints of a fragmentarily transmitted manuscript from the Upper Austrian State Museum at Linz and a text witness from the Princely Salm-Salm'sche Library in Anholt that was only very recently found. Information about the author, the transmission and textual history, as well as a glossary complement the edition. The significance of the illustrations for this innovative herbal type was taken into account to the extent that a representative selection of 64 full-page color reproductions of animal and vegetable drugs could be added. They are derived from the lead manuscript from which the text is drawn. The illustrations make it clear that the animals and plants are not drawn from nature but rather in keeping with the iconographic tradition. Up to now, only a few manuscripts…from the Kollegiatstift Mattsee, the Archiv der Erzdiozese Salzburg, the Archiv der Stadt Salzburg, the Salzburger Landesarchiv and the library of the Salzburg Museum were allocatable via the inventory of the Hill Monastic Manuscript Library. The manuscript collections are now for the first time accessible via the catalogue at hand following modern scientific standards. The majority of the manuscripts featured in the catalogue was written in the Late Middle Ages in the area of the medieval archdiocese of Salzburg and contain theological, legal and medical texts. In addition, however, the collections also include 9th-century fragments and 16th-century manuscripts, as well as manuscripts from the medieval intellectual centers of Italy and France. A significant number of manuscripts also transmit a wide scope of texts in the German vernacular: these include normative texts and works on historiography and theology, heraldry and military engineering, medical and alchemical receipts. The herbal of the Munich physician and writer Johannes Hartlieb (+ 1468) occupies a special place in the medical literature of the Middle Ages, for it is the only comprehensively illustrated herbal from the incunable period in the German language. Hartlieb, who was educated in Padua and was…personal physician to the Bavarian dukes Albrecht III and Siegmund, put his herbal together before the middle of the century. What is special and innovative about this work, which encompasses more than 170 chapters, are the illustrations of the drugs. They are present in all the extant manuscripts and form an integral part of the work.The structural framework for the sequence of chapters in the herbal is formed by the alphabetically arranged section about herbs from the "Buch der Natur" by the Regensburg cathedral canon Konrad of Megenberg (+ 1374), whose text Hartlieb took over word-for-word almost in its entirety. In addition, he enriched his work with 76 additional chapters on drugs, arranged as a rule alphabetically in a block at the end of each letter of the alphabet. Sources have been found for only a small number of these additional chapters. Nonetheless, it must remain an open question as to whether the remaining chapters are an original contribution by Hartlieb to this herbal; it is more probable that they are derived from a source that has not yet been identified. Hartlieb departed from the alphabetical principle of arrangement in his opening chapters, which have drugs derived from animals as their content. Here Konrad also turned to the encyclopedia of nature by Konrad of Megenberg, but in this case he excerpted only the medically relevant portions of the corresponding chapters on four-footed animals.The first critical edition of this text on the basis of the entire tradition known to us today fulfills a long-recognized gap in the literature. Until now there have only been reprints of a fragmentarily transmitted manuscript from the Upper Austrian State Museum at Linz and a text witness from the Princely Salm-Salm'sche Library in Anholt that was only very recently found. Information about the author, the transmission and textual history, as well as a glossary complement the edition. The significance of the illustrations for this innovative herbal type was taken into account to the extent that a representative selection of 64 full-page color reproductions of animal and vegetable drugs could be added. They are derived from the lead manuscript from which the text is drawn. The illustrations make it clear that the animals and plants are not drawn from nature but rather in keeping with the iconographic tradition.
