Healy's account of the Corwin's expedition surveying the coast of Alaska and the Kobuck River includes descriptions of the coastline, fauna, as well as several photographs and sketches of the landscape and Inuit people. Michael Healy (1839-1904) was bo…rn in Georgia into slavery. Healy spent the majority of his life surveying the Alaskan coastline, joining his first expedition in 1865. He captained the Corwin, a revenue cutter for the United States Revenue Cutter Service, which was established by Alexander Hamilton as a customs enforcement service. Under its command, Healy conducted search and rescue missions, delivered supplies to local villages and policed the Alaskan seas. The purchase of Alaska in 1867 meant that the region and range of responsibility for the service increased. He left the navy at mandatory retirement age in 1903. His mother, Mary Eliza Smith, was a slave in a common law marriage to Micheal Morris Healy, a wealthy plantation owner. To allow his children freedom and an education, Healy's father sent him along with his eight siblings up north. Healy's siblings became prominent members of Catholic Church, with his brother James becoming the first known black Catholic priest and his sister Eliza one of the first Black Catholic Mother Superiors. Quarto. Half-tone frontispiece and 32 plates, 5 engraved plates, 2 chromolithograph plates with tissue guards. Original black cloth, front cover lettered in gilt, covers triple-panelled in blind. Library label (Bill Memorial Library) to front pastedown, annotated "Discard". Wear to cloth, spine crudely recoloured in places, spine ends and tips bumped, minor marks to front cover, tear to rear free endpaper professionally repaired with tape, plates clean and bright. A very good copy.
