Das von der Reichsregierung in Auftrag gegebene und als Propagandafilm konzipierte Werk ist zwar an die historische Figur des Joseph Süß Oppenheimer (16981738) angelehnt, entspricht jedoch nicht den überlieferten Quellen, die darauf hindeuten, dass Süß Oppenheimer lediglich ein Sündenbock war, der für die Verfehlungen des Herzogs Karl Alexander von Württemberg (16841737) büßen musste. Jud Süß ist ein Vorbehaltsfilm der Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung. Er gehört damit zum Bestand der Stiftung, ist nicht für den Vertrieb freigegeben, und darf nur mit Zustimmung und unter Bedingungen der Stiftung gezeigt werden.
