Wie alle Ausgaben selten: Von vorliegender Ausgabe sind weltweit noch 52 Exemplare und Fragmente in Bibliotheken erhalten, vier weitere Exemplare gelten als verschollen. [Walter Kofler] // Zweispaltiger Druck, bis zu 53 Zeilen. Entgegen der Ausgabe von 1545 ohne die gereimte Vorrede. Das Buch ist in vier Teile gegliedert, von denen die ersten beiden einen zusammenhängenden Sagenkomplex bilden: Die Sage von Ortnit, der eine heidnische Prinzessin erobern will und sich dabei Hilfe vom unsichtbaren Zwerg Alberich sichert, vom heidnischen König Dracheneier geschenkt bekommt und - als die Drachen zur Plage im Land werden - diese zu besiegen versucht, aber getötet wird. Der Held Wolfdietrich, Sohn von Hugdietrich (von dem wiederum eine Sage Einklang findet), erschlägt schließlich den Drachen und gewinnt so die Hand der verwitweten Königin und die Gefolgschaft der Ritter der Lombardei, mit deren Hilfe er dem treuen Berchtung zu Hilfe eilt, der ihm als einziger im Erbfolgekrieg gegen seine Brüder beisteht. Der dritte Teil enthält die Sage vom Rosengarten zu Worms (auch "großer Rosengarten" in Abgrenzung zum "Laurin"), jener Sage, die eine Verknüpfung von Nibelungensage und Dietrichsage bildet und vom Wettstreit Dietrichs und seiner Kämpfer gegen Kriemhilds Helden im von ihr gehüteten Rosengarten erzählt; der vierte Teil behandelt den sog. "kleinen Rosengarten", die Sage vom Kampf Dietrichs gegen den listigen Zwerg Laurin; an diesen Teil angeschlossen ist die Heldenprosa. Das Heldenbuch ist "[.] die letzte Zusammenfassung der deutschen Heldensage, auch der Nibelungensage, in volksmäßige, rhapsodenhaften Strophen" (Neufforge). Die enthaltenen Sagen erfreuten sich im 15. und 16. Jhd. großer Beliebtheit und wurden im Zuge des zunehmenden Nationalbewusstseins im 19.
