In chronologischer Reihenfolge schildert der Historiker Helmut Caspar die dramatischen Ereignisse des Jahres 1989 in der DDR und ihr Echo in der Bundesrepublik. Das Buch zeigt, wie aus dem anfanglichen ,Wir sind das Volk" der machtvolle Ruf ,Wir sind ein… Volk" wurde und welcher Muhen es bedurfte, im In- und Ausland Vorbehalte gegen den Einigungsprozess abzubauen, der am 3. Oktober 1990 im Beitritt der DDR zur Bundesrepublik gipfelte. Zwanzig Jahre ist es her, dass sich in der DDR massenhafter Burgerprotest gegen die SED-Herrschaft, gegen tagliche Bevormundung, Uberwachung, Wahlfalschung und schamlose Unterdruckung der Meinungs- und Reisefreiheit erhob. Die von der Realitat entruckte Fuhrung des hoch verschuldeten Arbeiter- und Bauern-Staats provozierte die Bevolkerung durch geschonte Statistiken und die Aussagen, die Mauer werde noch hundert Jahre stehen und die in der Sowjetunion praktizierte Politik von ,Glasnost und Perestroika" sei fur die DDR kein Vorbild. Mit ihrem Ruf nach wirklicher Demokratie, spurbarer Verbesserung der Lebensverhaltnisse und Reisefreiheit, nach einem ,Sozialismus mit menschlichem Antlitz" vereinten sich unzahlige DDR-Burger im Herbst 1989 zu Friedensgebeten und Montagsdemonstrationen. Durch diese Massenproteste zwang man Honecker zur Abdankung, brachte die Mauer zu Fall und es kam ein Jahr spater zur deutschen Wiedervereinigung.
