La matriz de estos cuentos de terror se encuentra en la vida del propio Henry S. Whitehead, quien a comienzos de los años veinte emprendió su labor como diácono en la región de Santa Cruz, en las Islas Vírgenes. Allí quedó fascinado por las costumbres locales, los ritos vudú y las supersticiones acerca de zombis y vampiros, fuertemente arraigadas en el folklore de las Antillas. La mayoría de relatos incluidos en este volumen están narrados por Gerard Canervin, especie de alter ego del propio Whitehead y a quien utiliza para demostrar su conocimiento y afecto por el sistema local de creencias sobrenaturales.
