There are tones of Jonathan Swift here, with Latin-speaking owls in powdered wigs standing in as judges at Court. Dickens, whose "Bleak House" was originally published five years prior, would also have been an influence, as many have interpreted that tale as a call for the reform of Chancery. **AUTHOR Henry Green (1801-1873) English minister and schoolmaster, wrote various sermons, poetry and religious/academic studies, including a number of publications for the Holbein Society, of which he was a founding member. The ARTIST Thomas Letherbrow, (1825-1899) was a part of the Manchester arts circle who founded the United Society of Manchester Artists. He was also a poet and a noted antiquarian as well as a multi-talented artist, producing works in many media and illustrating a large number of books, as this, with engravings. Add to basketFirst edition in English. Frontispiece. Inscribed by Green to Robert Byron's mother, Margaret, 'M. Byron from Henry Yorke. Xmas. 1928 Vienna'. Spine slightly darkened, cloth slightly soiled, free endpapers browned, else a very good copy. Green spent the Christmas of 1928 with Robert Byron's family, then living in Vienna, and had brought the manuscript of 'Living' for Mrs. Byron to read. It was one of the coldest winters of the century and Green spent much of his time sitting by the stove and engaging in conversation. In a letter to Green, the following summer, she wrote: 'Three extremely nice young Oxford men came to tea with us yesterday and when they had gone we said what very nice men they were, quite charming, so pleasant, delightful manners, such typical Englishmen, so suitable for the diplomatic service, good figureheads, so fluent at German, so very nice but oh Lord so dull, if only Henry had been here.'. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. vii. 254pp. + 8pp. ads. Bound in the original blue cloth with blind-stamped publisher device on the front board. Blue top stain. Housed in a one quarter leather over cloth slipcase with gilt titling and date. Signed by the author with inscription on the endpaper: 'For James Hanley from Henry Green 11/7/31.' Green and Hanley shared an undeserved obscurity within English modernist literature, as well as a deep mutual admiration for each other's work. Green put forth Hanley as superior to Conrad. The novelist and critic Harold Heslop, while lamenting the state of British literature, was relieved by the emergence of what he called a 'new school of writers' of 'proletarian stock.' Christopher Isherwood would call Green's second novel Living, 'the best proletarian novel ever written' and V.S. Pritchett would place him in 'the mad tradition in English literature - Sterne, Carroll, Firbank, and Mrs. Woolf.' An important association. The book with shelf rubbing along the edges and corners, spine somewhat toned, top edge lightly rubbed, the endpapers with peculiar light violet off-setting of some kind though unobtrusive, otherwise the binding is strong and tight, the text is clean and unmarked, and the boards remain colorful and distinct. The slipcase with several light scuffs. As pictured.

Add to basketFirst edition. Inscribed by the author to Anthony Powell, 'Tony from Henry, 18 Ap 27'. Recipient's bookplate on front pastedown; spine slightly cocked and (along with spine and two edges of rear board) faded, else a very good copy. An excellent association copy of the author's first book. Close friends from prep school, Green and Powell had both gone on to Eton and Oxford, where they shared lodgings in Powell's final year. In the first volume of his autobiography, Powell recalled their early friendship and how, in their dormitory, 'like professional narrators of the Orient', he and Green had been 'recruited, during the half-hour after lights-out when talking was permitted, to entertain the company by telling stories.' There was also a brief attempt at writing a novel together, sitting on the radiators in the gym. Though not published until his last year at Oxford, Green had begun writing 'Blindness' while still at Eton, the school appearing as 'Note' in early versions of the novel, before being altered to the slightly less transparent 'Noat'. Add to basketFirst edition, primary binding. Inscribed by the author to Nevill Coghill, 'Nevill with love and gratitude for so often listening to this book from Henry'. Spine and two edges of lower board slightly faded, corners sightly bumped, else a very good copy. Six years older than Green, and from an Anglo-Irish family (his aunt was the first half of Somerville & Ross), Nevill Coghill was a young Oxford don. Green's biographer, Jeremy Treglown, describes Coghill as 'the most important personal influence' on Green's work of the mid to late twenties. Green was in his first year at Oxford and already working on his first novel, Blindness, when they met. Early on in their friendship, that novel became their main topic of conversation, spilling over into their letters to each other. When Chatto & Windus rejected the novel, it was Coghill who suggested showing it to an editor friend at Dent, Guy Pocock, through whose hands it found its way to Green's first editor, Edward Garnett. One of Coghill's literary recommendations was the poetry of Charles Doughty, whose syntactical idiosyncrasies included an avoidance of small parts of speech such as the definite article, a course notably adopted by Green for Living.
