Die Geschichte beginnt mit der Ruckkehr von Hellem, dem Sohn des reichen Geldverleihers Kaleb, ins Kolner Ghetto, nur um einen Tag spater von der Pest heimgesucht zu werden. Die Stadt verwandelt sich rasch in ein Chaos aus Leichenzugen, panischen Menschen und Geisslerprozessionen, wahrend die Bevolkerung in den Kirchen Zuflucht sucht. Inmitten dieser apokalyptischen Szenerie wird die absurde Anschuldigung laut, dass die Juden die Brunnen vergiftet hatten, um den Schwarzen Tod uber die Christen zu bringen. Hellem und seine Familie werden schnell zu Opfern des fanatischen Hasses. Wilhelm Jensen schildert eindrucksvoll die Entstehung von Gewalt gegen eine hilflose Minderheit und verleiht der Geschichte durch bemerkenswertes psychologisches Feingefuhl Tiefe. Neben der Darstellung von Gewalt ist das Werk auch eine Familiensaga, die sich um die Wiedervereinigung einer zerrissenen Gemeinschaft dreht. Es thematisiert Schuld, Suhne, Intrige, Verrat und Liebe in einer Zeit, in der das Uberleben im Vordergrund steht. Sigmund Freud kannte dieses Buch und es wird gesagt, dass es der Grund war, warum er Koln nie besuchte. Frank Schatzing hat das Vorwort fur die modernisierte Fassung verfasst.
