Il écrit à l'éditeur de musique Maurice Schlesinger pour s'engager à lui livrer sous deux mois un morceau de piano, faute de quoi il devra verser la somme de 1000 francs. Ce morceau sera « sur les motifs de Guido et Ginevra », opéra de Scribe et Halevy joué la première fois le 5 mars 1838. Cet engagement sera tenu, et Herz livrera une Fantaisie brillante sur Guido et Ginevra ainsi qu'une Grande valse sur Guido[1]. [1] Schlesinger était l'éditeur de l'opéra composé par Halévy. Il demanda ainsi à plusieurs compositeurs de faire des morceaux sur les motifs. Au catalogue de 1838, on retrouve ainsi une petite dizaine de morceaux.
