Scheuchzer believed that the Old Testament was a factual account of the history, of the world. He initiated a major project to explain Biblical events in terms of physics, medicine, and natural history. His aim was to prove the existence of God through science, but the Swiss authorities initially refused to grant him a permit to publish it. Eventually a lushly illustrated edition of this extraordinary work as printed between 1731 and 1735 in the great German publishing center Augsburg. Entitled 'Jobi physica sacra oder Hiobs Natur-Wissenschaft verglichen mit der heutigen', the work became known as the Physica Sacra or the Kupfer-Bibel. It became famous for its elaborate illustrations, in which each biblical story was framed with an architectural border containing details relevant to the chapter depicted.Author: Johann Jakob Scheuchzer (1672-1733) was a physician by training, with a strong interest in natural history and paleontology. Born in Switzerland, the son of a physician, he studied at University in Germany & later returned to Zurich to take a professorship in Mathematics. Like many scientists of the day, he considered the Old Testament a factual account of the history of the earth. In his extensive travels he amassed one of the largest fossil collections of the 18th century. He hypothesized that all plants had perished in the flood described in the bible, & discovered what he believed to be the fossil of a human flood victim. In his masterpiece, Physica Sacra, he details his theory at length, using references to the 1611 King James Bible. The book was a sensation & was published simultaneously in Latin, German & French, each issue with exactly the same plates. His theories were not disproved until the work of Cuvier.Biography engraver: Georg Daniel Heumann (1691-1759) was a German engraver based in Nuremberg. He is especially known for his illustrations in scientific and religious publications, including the monumental 'Physica Sacra'.Biography artist: Johann Melchior Fussli (1677-1736) was a Swiss illustrator and printmaker. He played a central role in the visual conception of Scheuchzer's 'Physica Sacra', producing detailed drawings that merged scientific observation with biblical allegory. Salomon Kleiner starb 1761 in Wien. // Salomon Kleiner was a veduta artist and engraver. He was born in Augsburg in 1700 and became a student of Johann August Corvinus. Since 1720 he lived in Vienna, where he began drawing the monasteries, churches, secular buildings, streets and palaces of the imperial city on behalf of the Augsburg art publishers Johann Andreas Pfeffel and Jeremias Wolff. Between the years 1724 and 1737 these resulted in a large-scale copperplate series. Kleiner also drew the Schönborn palaces in Pommersfelden and Mainz and the Göttweig Abbey. He had been a professor at the Theresianum since 1746. Salomon Kleiner died in Vienna in 1761. With his city vedutas and views, Kleiner created works that were of the highest representation value for his princely and patrician clients. Due to their accuracy and attention to detail, they are also outstanding documents of building culture and urban planning. In many cases, his engravings are the only sources today that show the original shape of the buildings with their original furniture and equipment. Kleiner's complete work is above all a unique compendium of baroque architecture in southern Germany and Austria. // Wir, das Antiquariat Steffen Völkel, kaufen und verkaufen alte Bücher, Handschriften, Zeichnungen, Autographen, Grafiken und Fotografien.
