Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the birth of atomic energy, a revolutionary scientific discovery that quickly transformed from a theoretical possibility to a powerful weapon of war. The author, a scientist who worked on the Manhattan Project, takes readers on a journey through the crucial moments in the development of the atomic bomb, detailing the scientific breakthroughs and the complex decisions that led to its deployment. From the early research of scientists like Rutherford and Fermi to the intense secrecy surrounding the Manhattan Project, the book delves into the international collaborations and political motivations that shaped this pivotal era. The author's firsthand experience allows for a unique and personal perspective on the profound moral and ethical dilemmas surrounding the development and use of atomic power, questioning the cost of scientific advancement in the face of potential devastation. The book ultimately serves as a poignant reminder of the complex interplay between scientific progress, political ambition, and the responsibility of humankind in the face of unprecedented power. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Original cloth. Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. Boston Studies in the Philosophy and History of Science, vol. 139. Modern physical science is constituted by specialized scientific fields rooted in experimental laboratory work and in rational and mathematical representations. Contemporary scientific explanation is rigorously differentiated from religious interpretation, although, to be sure, scientists sometimes do the philosophical work of interpreting the metaphysics of space, time, and matter. However, it is rare that either theologians or philosophers convincingly claim that they are doing the scientific work of physical scientists and mathematicians. The rigidity of these divisions and differentiations is relatively new. Modern physical science was invented slowly and gradually through interactions of the aims and contents of mathematics, theology, and natural philosophy since the seventeenth century. In essays ranging in focus from seventeenth-century interpretations of heavenly comets to twentieth-century explanations of tracks in bubble chambers, ten historians of science demonstrate metaphysical and theological threads continuing to underpin the epistemology and practice of the physical sciences and mathematics, even while they became disciplinary specialties during the last three centuries. The volume is prefaced by tributes to Erwin N. Hiebert, whose teaching and scholarship have addressed and inspired attention to these issues.
