Tear to paper from wax seal but no content loss. Mailed at 5 c…ent rate with manuscript postmark dated January 16 Mt. Hope NY. Very legible. Full Transcription provided. Good Condition. Mid 19th century letter with typical content of illnesses and community and school activities. What stands out are the two paragraphs of talk of New Yorkers heading to the gold fields of California. California gold was discovered in January 1848 with scattered gold seekers arriving by the fall of that year. The peak of the rush was 1849 with thousands of prospectors from the Eastern half of the United States making the treacherous journey west, usually via boat. "The california Gold Fever has even reached our place. Some in Middletown have gone to reap their weal or woe in the regions referred to, two by the name of Jackson, one by the name of Reeves, Gilbert Swezy, the lawyer, and Henry Penney have gone, expecting to sail around the cape. Swezy was robbed of all his money ($250) in V.G. before he set sail but it was made up by his comrades. George W Conkling sailed with the same vessel last Thursday." "A report is circulated that Edgar Conkling left his school at Flushing L.I. for the gold regions followed by his Teacher who prevailed on him to go home, and on arriving his Father gave him money and send on the dig gold. " An average letter punctuated by gold rush fever.
