The author was driven to write this book by the ethnic strife he saw in his home country. He begins by describing the history of the Slavic people and emphasizes the strength of their national identity and longing for unification, and then explores the hostile policies that Austria and Hungary used to suppress Yugoslav unity around the turn of the twentieth century. The author suggests that the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand was a welcome event for Austria and Germany because it provided them with a pretext for attacking Serbia and halting the growth of Yugoslav nationalism. He argues that this power grab illustrates the threat that Pan-Germanism poses to world peace. The author concludes by proposing that a restructuring of the Austro-Hungarian Empire is vital to preventing another world war and that the best way to accomplish this is to ensure the self-determination of the various ethnic groups under Austrian rule.
