Speckled page edges, plain endpapers. In good condition. Spine darkened and rubbed, small chip to head of spine. Front hinge cracked. Rubbing to boards, mostly around edges. Mild foxing to endpapers, bookplate to front ?Bridehead,? (Dorset). Occasional foxing spots and handling marks to pages, repaired tears to edges of p13-16. Else a tight copy. xxv + 353pp. A notable volume of 19th-century Anglican theology published in 1821 by the Rev. Charles James Hoare. The book contains 315 pages and was originally printed by J. Shipp, with distribution handled by prominent London publishers of the era, including Hatchard, Rivingtons, Seeley, and Baldwin, Cradock, and Joy. The sermons primarily outline the practical and moral attributes defining a Christian's daily life. True to Evangelical Anglican theology, Hoare bridges the gap between scriptural doctrine and behavioral transformation, emphasizing humility, faith, and adherence to biblical teaching over mere ritualistic tradition. Beyond standard Sunday sermons, the 1821 volume features special discourses delivered on particular national or local events. This includes his highly regarded 1820 sermons, Thoughts suited to the Present Crisis, which he preached specifically to support the National Schools.
