One of the most striking examples of several items the press produced during the Watergate era. See Johnston p. 54 for a great account by Eileen Callahan of…distributing this bumper sticker to senators in Washington. This appears to be a variant or proof copy not noted by Johnston, printed on white, uncoated paper. Johnston p. 206. Fine.

Contact seller5-star sellerEarly work from the legendary California press. Alastair Johnson writes in ZEPHYRUS IMAGE: A Bibliography that this early work was "probably the second from the press." This particular state is a "reissue" of the first state, but which was "probably left over from the first issue," as the text header is still intact (the linocut… was later repurposed for another broadside reading "Detonate Sutro Tower." [Johnson 184]. Broadside, 8.75" by 6.5" approx. Near fine. Bottom-right corner shows hint of foxing and trivial touch of wear. Else clean, sharp.

In Johnston p-208 (illustrated) who collates for blue Tweedweave wrappers only. Commercially one of the scarcest and most sought after of Zephyrus Image ephemera. Provenance: from Holbrook Teter's archive with the old Maggs pencil stock number in back. The cover title is Dade County Bible , referring to '.Anita Bryant ? the former Miss America and spokesperson for Florida's frozen juice industry [who was] also the vocal leader of an infamous anti-gay campaign in Dade County, Florida' (p-128 Stephen Vincent in Johnstone). The flipbook starts with a small black cross that, when flipped, trans- forms into a swastika. Teter used a form of situationist style street theatre to distribute them in the Haight, vending them from an ice-cream or cigarette girl's tray in the Castro, bastion of gay civil rights, even selling two to Harvey Milk for 50¢ apiece (p-130 ibid). 134642.

Alastair Johnston, in his ZEPHRYUS IMAGE: A Bibliography, describes how Myers arrived at Teter's print shop with "a linoleum block depicting a H…ippie Jesus in front of car radiators brandishing a crucifix wrench. Teter knew at once he wanted to work with Myers. They printed broadsides with the block [.] and Teter drove Myers back to Berkeley where they pasted them on the walls of the City dump [.] This appraoch would signal the future for Zephyrus Image" (21). Scarce; OCLC locates just three holdings (Yale, University of Chicago, and SUNY Buffalo). A auspcious debut to this influencial West Coast artists' press. [Johnson 184].
