Diese kulturelle Botschaft vertreten sie in Ausstellungen, Theaterinszenierungen und mit politischer Aufklärungsarbeit gegenüber der Weltöffentlichkeit und wenden sie als ideelle Waffe gegen das nationalsozialistische Regime.Große Teile des Nachlasses des Fotografen Josef Breitenbach (1896-1984) belegen diese Manifestationen des anderen Deutschlands im Pariser Exil. Breitenbach hat das künstlerische Schaffen der deutschen Emigranten in Paris in seinen Fotografien festgehalten. Sie sind oft die einzigen Zeugnisse, die uns bleiben, da die Exponate, Dokumente und Skripte von einst zum großen Teil unwiederbringlich verloren sind. Darüber hinaus steht Breitenbachs Weg stellvertretend für das Schicksal eines Protagonisten der 'Freien Deutschen Kultur'. Sein Werdegang als Künstler, der Deutschland 1933 wegen seiner Beteiligung an der Novemberrevolution von 1918 verlassen muß und dessen Flucht 1941 in den USA endet, ist ein Stück exemplarischer Exilgeschichte.
