Text holländisch und englisch. - In de Nederlanden is in de 16de en 17de eeuw de handel in kunstwerken en in het bijzonder van schilderijen, snel tot ontwikkeling gekomen. Het is bekend dat in de 17de eeuw vele schilders deze handel als bijverdienste beoefenden. Schilders verkochten niet alleen hun eigen schilderijen, aanvankelijk op kermissen en jaarmarkten, maar ook die van anderen. John Evelyn, een Engelsman die in 1641 een Rotterdamse kermis bezocht, merkte verbaasd op dat hij daar voor een kerk een grote hoeveelheid schilderijen, waaronder landschappen en boerenvoorstellingen, zag uitgestald. Veel boeren uit de omtrek waren kopers. Zij kochten de schilderijen niet alleen om hun huizen op te sieren, maar ook om ze elders weer met winst te verkopen. Het is een bekend feit dat schilders zoals Abraham Saftleven en vele anderen, waaronder ook Rembrandt en Vermeer, zich actief met de schilderijenhandel bezig hielden. Aangezien het St. Lucas Gilde het monopolie van de schilderijenhandel in eigen handen trachtte te houden, konden aanvankelijk alleen schilders als handelaar optreden; alleen op jaarmarkten was de vrije verkoop toegestaan. Een bijkomende gedachte was bovendien dat slechts schilders een goed oordeel over kunstwerken konden vellen. Dit betekende niet dat in de loop van de 17de eeuw niet toch het type van de gespecialiseerde makelaar en kunsthandelaar opkwam, tezamen met de toon- of kunstkamer voor de verkoop van schilderijen in steden zoals Amsterdam, Den Haag en later Rotterdam, waar ook het verzamelwezen bloeide. Namen als Uylenburgh, Clemens de Jonge, Johannes de Renialme en andere zijn ons uit de literatuur bekend. Gerrit Uylenburgh, een zwager van Rembrandt, heeft een officiële opdracht van de Staten van Holland vervuld door in 1660 een groep schilderijen samen te stellen die, bekend onder de naam 'Dutch gift' aan Karel II ten geschenke is gegeven.
