Dies gilt sonderheitlich bezüglich der ersten Hälfte des XIV. Jahrhunderts. Allzu sehr hat man auf die Berichte der Chronisten abgestellt und zum Teil kritiklos deren Nachrichten übernommen. Der daraus resultierenden Widersprüche ward man sich wohl bewusst .]. Ich beschränke mich [.] in der Hauptsache auf die Beziehungen des Oberlandes, speziell dessen Mittelpunktes, der altehrwürdigen Abtei Disentis, zu den Eidgenossen der drei Länder Uri, Schwiz [Schwyz] und Unterwalden, die bis in das zweite Dezennium des XIV. Jahrhunderts zurückdatieren. Allüberall Klarheit zu schaffen, wird indessen auch mir nicht vergönnt sein."
