Sub-title reads: A collection of 68 water-colours by C. G. Finch-Davies, originally commissioned to illustrate Lt.-Col. Boyd Robert Horsburgh's 1912 volume "The Game-Birds and Water-Fowl of South Africa". Number 1954 of an edition limited to 5026 copies. 4to; original purple cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; laminated pictorial dustwrapper, and matching laminated pictorial slipcase; pp. 190; full-page colour illustrations to rectos, and modern descriptive text to facing versos. A few minor fox spots to edges and reverse of dustwrapper, else fine. "Gamebirds & Waterfowl of Southern Africa is the showcase for 68 exquisite watercolours by the late Claude Gibney Finch-Davies, whose life - and the tragic circumstances surrounding his death in 1920 - is described in a comprehensive biography contained in this volume. Originally, the paintings were commissioned by Boyd Horsburgh, to illustrate his book 'The Game-Birds and Water-Fowl of South Africa', published in London during 1912. It was widely acclaimed and brought Finch-Davies recognition as an outstanding bird artist. All 68 illustrations are exceptional in that they have coloured backgrounds, whereas Finch-Davies's other paintings (numbering over 1000) have simple, pencilled-in ones.".
