Add to basketNelson Mandela's personal copy, inscribed by him in prison on the half-title "N. R. Mandela Pollsmoor Maximum Prison. 14 January 1987", together with his copy of the supplement, signed by him on the front wrapper. Both books were given by Mandela to his lawyer, Priscilla Jana. Jana (1943-2020) was a member of the African National Congress and the key legal counsel for the leaders of the movement, including, alongside Mandela, his wife Winnie, Steve Biko, Govan Mbeki, Walter Sisulu, and Archbishop Desmond Tutu. She was one of very few individuals allowed access to Mandela and other high-ranking ANC prisoners and was able to transmit coded messages between the prisoners and the ANC on the outside. She later was elected to the post-Apartheid parliament, was a major figure in the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and served as South Africa's ambassador to the Netherlands and Ireland. Mandela gave Jana a small collection of books on his release from prison, including these. The book was first published in 1977; the supplement is the first edition, and "incorporates changes in the law up to 31 December 1983". The publication is a very specialized handbook, aimed at the lawyer and academic, giving a meticulous account of the Apartheid legal system which imprisoned Mandela for 27 years; six of these years were in Pollsmoor Prison, from 1982 to 1988. Mandela recalled in his memoir, "The prison itself is set amidst the strikingly beautiful scenery of the Cape. But this natural beauty was invisible to us behind Pollsmoor's high concrete walls. At Pollsmoor I first understood the truth of Oscar Wilde's haunting line about the tent of blue that prisoners call the sky" (Long Walk to Freedom, p. 447). 2 vols, octavo. Original laminated boards, and original wrappers for supplement. Housed in a green quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Very light soiling and rubbing from handling; very good.
