Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Recent progress in molecular biology has led to a rapid expansion of our understanding of the proteins that are essential for hemostasis and thrombosis. The goal of the XXI Annual Scientific Symposium of the American Red Cross was to provide a forum to explore and document the impact of recombinant DNA technology in this field. The speakers described the essential features of the genes responsible for key plasma proteins important in hemostasis, including procoagulant Factors VIII and IX and anticoagulant proteins, Antithrombin III and Protein C. They emphasized the advances in recombinant DNA technology that have led to the cloning of these genes. Careful examination of the gene sequence has then provided a clearer understanding of the structure of the encoded proteins, and has given additional insight into their functional domains and their interactions in hemostasis. At the same time, these advances have made it possible to better characterize hemostatic disorders. A large number of published studies have shown that the mutations affecting biological activity are clustered in areas that define functional domains. They have led to fundamental advances in our understanding of specific diseases and they have made it possible to develop more accurate and sensitive diagnostic tests for the detection of the disease states.

In the ancient Middle East, blood and life were coupled. Blood was the primary substance necessary for life, given to God in sacrifice and forbidden as a food to mortals by Levitical law. Blood was essential for rites of purification and consecration. But the flow of blood during menstruation or parturition rendered a woman unclean. The circumcision of a male child required 33 days of 'blood purification' by the mother. ' Circumcision, the visible reminder of the covenant of Abraham lijith Yahweh, was required of newborn Jewish males. It 'connote(d) suitability for participation in what God is doing. '2 Hence, free and uncontrolled bleeding of the male child during circumcision, during the ratification of God's covenant, would be noted with awe and concern by those of the Jewish faith. It should not be surprising that the first genetic counseling offered to families with hemophilia is found in the Babylonian Talmud (compilation of Jewish law dated to about the third century AD) and concerns the necessity for circumcision in families with what we would now call hemophilia.

SOBRE EL ILUSTRADOR:: Nacido en Barcelona en 1902, Narro fue como tenía que ser republicano y catalanista. Al término de la Guerra Civil salió a Francia y fue a dar a un campo de concentración donde la pasó muy mal. De tal manera, como no había tenido mayor significación política en España, con tal de abandonar el campo prefirió regresar a Cataluña. Pero ahí tampoco le fue bien. Eran los años cuarenta y la represión franquista estaba en todo su esplendor. Narro es uno de tantos exiliados republicanos que salió disimuladamente por el puerto de Barcelona y no es contado entre tales, pero es un grave error, puesto que decidió salir como resultado del constante hostigamiento de que era víctima. En 1950 lo encontramos ya a salvo en el Distrito Federal y, dos años después, ya casado con tapatía, se instaló definitivamente en Guadalajara. Tanto porque nuestra ciudad se hallaba en aquellos tiempos al margen de cualquier movimiento editorial, como por la sordera que le dejó la guerra que se fue incrementando hasta volverse total y absoluta, fue quedando muy aislado del resto del mundo y, si bien no le faltaron nunca libros por ilustrar, tampoco mantuvo relaciones con otros ilustradores del país, dándose el caso de que más de uno creyó siempre que residía en Cataluña. Apenas cuando fue declarado por editores de todo el mundo de habla hispana como "el mejor ilustrador de Iberoamérica", los más curiosos o metiches vinieron a saber que Narro vivía y trabajaba en este rinconcito del planeta. Los mismos catalanes residentes en Guadalajara desconocían su existencia. Solamente el director de aquel heroico Boletín de Información Catalana, que se editó mensualmente desde 1961 hasta 1976, mantenía contacto con él gracias a su buena y generosa aportación de cartones alusivos a la represión franquista. Narro murió sin pena ni gloria en esta ciudad en el año de 1994. Nadie dijo nada hasta ahora que Rius le rindió el homenaje al que me he adherido con gran entusiasmo. Quizá valdría la pena que hiciéramos algo más para preservar su memoria y conocer y difundir ampliamente su obra. Size: 14x19cm.
