An early and uncommon novel from Hume's prolific career a Greek Arcadian utopia founded by a wealthy Englishman on an isolated island in the Mediterranean. Set on the fictional island of Melnos, in the Cretan Sea, the Englishman, who expatriated himself from his native land 40 years prior to the beginning of the narrative, has through natural selection raised "a small colony of almost perfect men and women. Of these none was more beautiful than his own daughter Helena. To this colony, at the invitation of its sovereign, goes out Maurice Boylands, a wealthy young Englishman who has lost all zest and relish for life until he encounters Helena. Then all his susceptible nature awakes within him in passionate force. Life becomes entirely transformed, and for the first time he realises the joy of existence" (The Academy: A Weekly Review of Literature, Science, and Art, July 30, 1892). Conflict ensues when Boylands's scorned rival, Count Caliphronas, resolves to punish Helena and the island's inhabitants by waging war upon them. The island is ultimately destroyed by a volcanic eruption, with the principal characters being among the few survivors. Uncommon; OCLC shows 11 holdings in US institutions.
