Gaius Julius Hyginus (ca 64 BCE- 17 CE) was a Latin author, but whether a native of Spain or Alexandria is not sure, a pupil of the famous Cornelius Alexander Polyhistor, Caesar Augustus, by whom he was made superintendent of the Palatine library according to Suetonius. Fabulae consists of some three hundred very brief and plainly, even crudely told myths and celestial genealogies. They are now considered a wealth of information. Johannes Schefferus (1621 1679) was one of the most important Swedish humanists of his time. He was also known as Angelus and is remembered for writing hymns. Schefferus was born in Strasbourg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire. He came from the patrician family (Scheffer), studied at university there and briefly in Leiden, and was in 1648 made professor Skytteanus of eloquence and government at Uppsala University, a chair he held until his death in 1679. Schefferus also spent time on philological and archaeological studies. His De orbibus tribus aureis became the first publication on Swedish archaeology. The story of the Sami people, Lapponia (1673) became popular around Europe but was not translated into Swedish (as Lappland) until 1956. His posthumous publication, Suecia literata (The Learned Sweden) (1680) is a Swedish history of science bibliography. The first part contains classical myths while the second book deals with the zodiac, constellations and the planets (Thomas Munckerus, d. 1652). First Edition with Schefferus commentary. Condition: molto buono. in-4, (215x157 mm), ff. ''The woodcuts derive from medieval sources, and depict figures in medieval European costume. these figures were reprinted, and copied in numerous incunable editions, and were the source for the engraved images of Jacon de gheyn and via the latter many of the images in Johannes Bayer.'' (Watson, Celestial cartography in book form, 1482-1801). 34 Blatt. [Signaturformel: [A1], [A4], B-I4]. Ausgabe in Latein. Isaac/Shaw, A typographical catalogue of books printed in France, IS000420. Renouard, Répertoire, 234. vgl. Renouard, Marques typographiques (Lambert), 541. Graesse III, 403. Latin edition. Comprises 43 of the 50 woodcuts, including the 41 astronomical constellations, one of the planet woodcuts (the sun) and the microcosm woodcut. Later, plain leather binding with marbled boards and deckled edges. Binding a bit rubbed and with pressure marks, copy of a bookplate mounted on endpaper, small previous owner's stamps on endpapers, first page darkened and rubbed, first three and last seven sheets with defects to the margins (text not affected) as well as some pages' corners with light defects, title page darkened, rubbed as well as minimally ink stained and a bit dampstained, pages throughout lightly darkened and some with crease marks (especially first and last sheets), pages partially with tidemark (lightly darkened, not wavy, text not affected), sheets [A2] and [A3] as well as [K1-4] are missing.
