Es ist ein durch die Mobilität der Sprecher bedingtes Spezifikum der Sprache, dass diese Familien nicht immer räumlich voneinander getrennt sind, sondern sich teilweise geographisch überlappen. In Ansätzen wird versucht, die Geschichte des Romani bzw. die Ausbreitung der Stämme in Europa zu rekonstruieren.Dem Textband ist ein Atlasband beigegeben, der genau auf den Textband abgestimmt ist. Es finden sich drei Typen von Karten: parallel gestalteteNordeuropa- und Südosteuropa-Karten sowie Karten von Gesamt-Europa, auf denen die sprachlichen Phänomene dargestellt sind. Die Variation wird überwiegend mit Hilfe von Symbolen kenntlich gemacht.Die CD-ROM enthält eine farbige Fassung der im Kartenteil des Buches mit Symbolen ausgeführten Nordeuropa-Karten, der Südosteuropa-Karten und der Europa-Karten sowie eine kleine Anzahl von Übersichtskarten.
