1p, 4to. On bifolium endorsed on reverse of second leaf: 'Prince Augustus | Vienna | October 25 | 1798'. In fair condition, aged and worn. Folded four times. Written in an undisciplined hand with an expansive signature (different from his later signature in being underlined). Reads: 'My Dear Small | Enclosed You Will find the Songs Which I promised You but You must not publish them as else I should do Harm to Isouard Who has that Intention. Probably You Will get them after I leave this Place being on my Road to Berlin. Lord Cholmondeley has answer'd my Letter and Will do every Thing He Can for You God bless You My Dear Boy I trust You Will do Well | Augustus Frederick'. 'Isouard' is Nicolas Isouard (1773-1818), French composer of Maltese extraction. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library. Hunter and his mother Ida Macalpine had a particular interest in the illness of King George III, and their book 'George III and the Mad Business' (1969) suggested the diagnosis of porphyria popularised by Alan Bennett in his play 'The Madness of George III'.…

8vo (ca. 12 x 19 to 14 x 21 cm). Approximately 2331 pp. in 578 letters, including 440 letters by Alexander II and 138 letters by Catherine Dolgorukova. Housed in three matching quarter burgundy morocco clamshell cases. The most substantial collection of unpublished letters by Tsar Alexander II ever offered: the extensive correspondence between Alexander II and Catherine Dolgorukova, preserving the intimate written record of one of the most consequential private relationships of the late Romanov court in a sequence of extraordinary scale and continuity. - Spanning the years from summer 1866, when their affair had just begun, to the end of 1879, shortly before their marriage, the archive comprises more than 2,300 pages and follows the relationship from its early, clandestine phase through the years in which Dolgorukova became the emperor's constant companion. The group includes 119 letters from Alexander II written between 19 August 1866 and 1 January 1867 and again in August and September 1868, 138 letters from Dolgorukova written between 18 August and 30 December 1866, and a further run of 321 letters from Alexander II written throughout 1879. - More than a private exchange, the correspondence documents the emotional underside of a reign otherwise defined by reform, crisis, and political violence. Alexander II is remembered above all for the emancipation of the serfs in 1861, yet after 1866 his rule increasingly unfolded under the pressure of reaction and revolutionary terrorism; these letters belong to that decisive final phase of his life and government. - Alexander had married Princess Marie of Hesse in 1841, and the couple had eight children together. Though the marriage did not end until Marie's death in 1880, Alexander was known for his infidelity, and after ascending to the throne in 1855, he began taking a series of mistresses. The final and most important of these mistresses was Catherine ("Katia"), whom Alexander had first met in 1859 while visiting the estate of the eleven-year old girl's father. Years later, the tsar and Katia met again on an official visit to her school. In December 1865, the pair began meeting for daily walks, and they are believed to have consummated their affair in July 1866. Less than two months after the death of his wife, Alexander morganatically married Katia. - The survival of so large and coherent a body of unpublished material is of exceptional evidentiary value. While numerous love letters between Tsar Alexander II and Princess Catherine have appeared on the market during the last decades, such a large sequential collection featuring letters from both parties has never before been offered. This collection is almost certainly the largest remaining in private hands. - Occasional creasing from previous folds; overall well preserved for an actively handled correspondence of this period.…

1¾ pp. on bifolium. 8vo. To his cousin Princess Louise of Prussia, Grand Duchess of Baden, whom Alexander addresses as "Ma chère et bonne Cousine", with thanks for Louise's affectionate letter of congratulations on the majority of Alexander's son Nikolai. Alexander apologizes for the tardiness of his response, as he has been travelling incessantly, and writes how much pleasure he takes in the visit of Louise's brother (later Frederick III) to Warsaw, and how Alexander regrets learning of the serious state of health of Louise's father Wilhelm I: "L'arrivée de Votre frère à Varsovie fut une véritable joie de coeur pour moi, car vous savez combien je l'aime et je suis heureux de pouvoir jouir de lui encore ici. J'ai été bien fâché d'apprendre la nouvelle indisposition de mon pauvre Oncle et qu'elle me prive du plaisir de le revoir. Je fais des voeux bien sincères pour que sa santé se rafermisse et Vous prie de me rappeler à son bon souvenir [.]". - With small blindstamped monogram. Enclosed is an engraved infant portrait of the King of Rome, Napoleon II, mounted on larger backing paper.…

8vo. 15½ pp. on 3 bifolia and 2 ff. Paginated. To his lover Catherine Dolgorouki, known as "Katia", about a year and a half after their first intimacy. Alexander reminisces about the the previous evening's lovemaking (here called "bingerles", an euphemism created by Katia): he confesses how this memory haunts him incessantly, assures Katia of his devotion, disclaims pertinaciously her suspicions of infidelity, and attempts to assuage Katia's jealousy. Alexander writes that he believes they both felt the same urge to surrender to each other immediately, but they will have to wait until they meet again: "Tous les details de notre délicieuse soirée d'hier me hantent sans cesse [.] il me semble que nous éprouvons la même rage de recommencer, ce qui n'aurait pas manqué d'arriver si nous pussions nous couch ensemble dans ce moment. Hélas! nous devrons patienter jusqu'à demain [.]" (21 Jan. 1868). - Alexander agrees with Katia that nothing in the world could be compared to the joy and happiness felt towards the beloved other. They had been able to read in one another's hearts how they were overwhelmed since they finally had become one after such a long time. Further, Alexander reminisces about ten days spent together in Paris during the world exhibition: "Ah! Oui, - tu as bien raison de dire que rien au monde ne peut se comparer au bonheur et à la jouissance que l'on éprouve réciproquement de l 'être aimé [.] tu as su lire dans mes yeux, comme moi dans les tiens, ce qui débordait dans nos coeurs, qui n'en formment qu'un depuis bien longtemps [.] Les 10 jours, que nous y avons passé ensemble, me paraissent comme un rêve de bonheur et il faut avouer que nous avons su en jouir comme des fous [.]" (22 Jan. 1868). - Other women are no longer to be of any interest to him; Katia has become everything to him, his joy, his happiness, his consolation, his courage, and he is overjoyed to be completely absorbed by her: "Tu es ma joie, mon bonheur, ma consolation, mon courage et je suis heureux, heureux, heureux, entends-tu d'être complètement absorbé par toi et de n'avoir rien d'autre en tête que toi [.]" (23 Jan. 1868). - With a small blindstamped vignette. In French throughout save for a few words in Russian (in Latin script).…
