Condition: Fine. - Over 50 words by the artist Indiana Gyberson diagonally penned at the end of a 1924 letter by Fridolf Johnson requesting a sample of her handwriting. Fridolf Johnson's 88-word letter is penned on both sides of a 10 inch high by 6-1/6 inch wide folded sheet. Fridolf "Being a student at the Art Institute" of Chicago was also a "student of the reading of character from hand-writing" and asks for a sample of Gyberson's. Fridolf's letter, penned before he started emphasizing his middle name, is signed "Lester F. Johnson".Responding 3 years later, Indiana Gyberson has penned her reply diagonally across the bottom of Fridolf's letter, a portion of her reply overlapping his signature. "It takes me 3 or 4 years to answer letters" she writes "in this case to beg you not to analyze my handwriting - What I already know of myself is all that I can bear." As Fridolf had praised her work, she continues "But all this time I have been grateful to you for your compliments." Signed "Indiana Gyberson" and dated "April something or other 1927".Folded twice for mailing, the letter is in fine condition together with Fridolf's original stamped self-addressed envelope with his pencil notations on the verso. The letter is also accompanied by 2 illustrations of Indiana Gyberson's paintings clipped from periodicals or catalogs. The American painter Indiana Gyberson (1879-1944) was born Anna Giberson and adopted her mother's first name when changing the spelling of her last. A student of the American Impressionist painter William Merritt Chase at the Shinnecock School of Art. Gyberson suffered an eye injury while living in Paris which forced her to change her style of painting. Living in New York, she showed at the Art Institute of Chicago and later moved to that city. Though she mostly painted exotic semi-nude women, she also painted portraits, still-lifes, and landscapes including a large landscape mural for the home of Julius Rosenwald. An illustrator and artist as well as a fine pressman Fridolf Johnson was an editor of American Artist Magazine until his retirement in the 1970's. As a graphic artist, he designed title panels for Hollywood movies and art & typography for advertising as well as dust jacket illustrations. He wrote and illustrated his own children's books in addition to other works. He also compiled and edited the Knopf book "Rockwell Kent: An Anthology of His Work". Fridolf went by his first name "Lester" until the early 1930's.RARE.

Small-8vo. 1 p. on bifolium. To the academic painter and art critic Charles-Olivier Merson, asking him for an invitation to the Exposition de Toulouse that was curated by Merson for his son-in-law, the marine painter André Delaistre: "Voulez-vous avoir la bonté d'envoyer une invitation pour l'exposition de Toulouse à mon gendre Mr André Delaistre [.]". - Little known today, Guillemet was a pioneer of impressionism and close to many important artists. He studied under Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Charles-François Daubigny, and Gustave Courbet. Other than many of his friends, Guillemet had a very successful entry to the Paris Salon in 1874, the monumental landscape "Bercy en décembre" and continued to exhibit successfully at the official Salon. When Cézanne first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882, he was described as a pupil of Guillemet, which was certainly an exaggeration but Guillemet had introduced Cézanne to Manet. In 1868/69 Guillemet modeled for Manet's famous painting "The Balcony", which is why his face is certainly better known than his name and own work today. - Well preserved.
8vo. 1 p. Charming and grateful letter to his friend and patron Dr. Georges de Bellio, one of the earliest collectors and supporters of the Impressionists:"Your treatment works wonders! Despite the cold weather we are enduring, I have been able to work outdoors without catching a cold or having a sore throat glory to you. I shall not be with you on Thursday. Goodbye. I shake your hand. Yours devotedly."A warm note of thanks from Sisley to the loyal physician who treated several Impressionist painters, including Monet, Pissarro, and Renoir, and who remained one of their steadfast friends and collectors.

It would be helpful for me to plan this tour if I knew when you may need Poirel for the casting of the Darzens cars. / I hope your car motors wonderfully and shows you the joys of tourism while waiting for the 24 HP's vanderbiltian pleasures! As for us, we are making a 'un petit 33 des famille' with pannes & pannettes, but I am now convinced that I have a good machine under my feet. / Please, with my respect, send Mrs. Viele my wife's fondest memory and trust in my wholehearted friendship. / P. Signac". Paul Signac [1863 - 1935]. French neo-impressionist painter who, working with Georges Seurat, helped develop the pointillist style. In 1884 he met Claude Monet & Georges Seurat. He was struck by the systematic working methods of Seurat & by his theory of colors & became Seurat's faithful supporter. Under his influence he abandoned the short brushstrokes of impressionism to experiment with scientifically juxtaposed small dots of pure color, intended to combine & blend not on the canvas but in the viewer's eye, the defining feature of pointillism. Many of Signac's paintings are of the French coast. He loved to paint the water. He left the capital each summer, to stay in the south of France in the village of Collioure or at St. Tropez. No Binding. Condition: Very Good. Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Turkish artist Seref Akdik sent to 'Nesidecigim ve Korkutcugum'. 30x23 cm. In Turkish. 2 p. He describes some of his travels in Turkey and started to paint some still-life paintings, especially of quince and black grapes. A long letter by Akdik. "Seref Akdik is a Postwar & Contemporary painter. Their work was featured in exhibitions at the Doku Art Gallery, Istanbul, and the Cer Modern. Seref Akdik's work has been offered at auction multiple times, with realized prices ranging from $11,756 USD to $28,091 USD, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. Since 1998 the record price for this artist at auction is $28,091 USD for Keman Kalesi ve Pazari, mountain village scene, sold at Bill Hood & Sons Art & Antique Auctions in 2016. In MutualArt's artist press archive, Seref Akdik is featured in Istanbul Modern Collection at Istanbul Airport, a piece from The Hürriyet in 2019.". (Source: Mutual Art). Seref Akdik was born in 1899 and was primarily inspired by the 1900s and 1910s. The first decades of the twentieth century were characterized by vibrant developments in pictorial art. It was the era of post-Impressionism and of experimentation, including the first forays into Expressionism and Abstraction. Many different groups of artists or loosely associated communities of the avant-garde in a number of major cities around the world evolved different modes of these key innovations. The first twenty years of the Twentieth Century can be seen to be among the most productive, and are noted as the time in art history when modern and modernist ideas began to take hold of cultural production. The new order and rationality, alongside mechanization in modes of production, saw art's parallel discipline of architecture develop extraordinarily in the work of designers such as Le Corbusier and Gerrit Rietveld. It was the era of the Bauhaus and the idea of a common discipline across all modes of creative arts. Most, if not all, of the significant art movements we associate with modern and contemporary art, can be viewed to source many of their key founding philosophies in the astounding diversity of work produced during this time.
