Condition: Very Good. Two handsome and well preserved incunable leaves from a bible printed in Latin at the press of Johann Zainer. Zainer was the second printer in Ulm, and is documented there with a first printed book in 1473, the Pestordnung by the Ulm city doctor Heinrich Steinhöwel. He further developed book decoration and published the first German translation of a work by Giovanni Boccaccio. Like Günther Zainer, printer in Augsburg, Johann Zainer came from Reutlingen; the two men might have been, or almost certainly were, related. He received his training as a printer in Strasbourg. After an initially successful career, Zainer's business declined after a few years; he was expelled from the city in 1493, probably because of debts, but returned later and resumed printing, albeit only a few books, until 1515 and was mentioned for the last time in 1523 [German Wikipedia]. The leaves are printed in double columns, with 50 lines in a gothic type. There are four red and black three-line initials, one initial in gray and black, and red underlining to mark new paragraphs. The paper is toned and has some darker staining, primarily in the margins but affecting some of text block. Light creasing along margins and pinpricks and slight chipping where leaves were removed from their book. A nice example of early German printing in very good condition. Measures 11 x 16 inches. EPHEM/053123.

A large folio leaf from the 1484 edition of Grantianus' DECRETUM printed in Augsburg Germany by Johann Schüssler. The leaf measures 395 x 280 mm (15 ¾ x 11 inches) printed in black & red in four columns. Fresh and very clean. See Goff, Incunabula in American Libraries (1964), item G-375. ISTC ig00375000. The Decretum Gratiani, also known as the Concordia discordantium canonum or Concordantia discordantium canonum or simply as the Decretumwas first published in the twelfth century as a textbook of canon law. Although the Church never formally recognized it as the official version of canon law, Decretum was widely used in the study of canon law from the mid-twelfth to the early twentieth century. Commonly referred to as the Decretum Gratiani, this text is comprised of excerpts from a variety of authorities, including church councils, papal letters, penitentials, Roman civil law, regulations of Germanic rulers, and the writings of Church fathers. Gratian's goal was to resolve discrepancies among canons, and organize the vast amount of rules governing the Church into a comprehensible legal system. It was used as the main source of law by canonists of the Roman Catholic Church until the Decretals, promulgated by Pope Gregory IX in 1234, obtained legal force, after which it was the cornerstone of the Corpus Juris Canonici, in force until 1917.

First Edition. Edition princeps. Very rare. A large folio leaf from the First Edition of the Greatest and Most Comprehensive Encyclopedias of the Middle Ages, printed by Adolf Rusch (the "R-Printer") in the Strassburg print shop of Johann Mentelin not after February 11, 1478. The Speculu[m] doctri[n]ale Vincentij beluacensis fr[atr]is ordinis p[rae]dicator[um] incipit forms part of the Speculum Maius, a great compendium of all the knowledge available to the Middle Ages, which consisted of the Speculum Naturale, Doctrinale and Historiale (which, along with the later Speculum Morale, comprises the largest incunabula known). In all the work was published in seven enormous folio volumes. The leaf measures 435 x 315 mm (17 x 12 ¼ inches), printed in double columns, 63 lines, nicely rubricated by hand with large initials. The text is one of the Index leaves, and is only half of one column on the verso. A fresh, clean example. Goff V-278; ITSC iv00278000. Vincentius Bellovacensis (Vincent of Beauvais, (circa 1190 - circa 1264) was a 13th Century Dominican monk at the monastery of Beauvais. He was connected with the royal family being librarian and tutor to Louis IX, and tutor to his sons. Vincent undertook to write a systematic and comprehensive treatment of all branches of human knowledge, the result being the momentus SPECULUM MAIUS, the greatest and most comprehensive of all the encyclopedias generated in the Middle Ages. It records a very complete overview of all the classical and ecclesiastical knowledge and information available to late medieval man. According to the original plan the work was divided into four main parts dealing respectively with nature, doctrine (science), morality and history (Speculum Naturale, Doctrinale, Morale, Historiale). The text of each of these sections consists of quoted extracts (some of them very long) from a large number of Latin, Greek, Arabic and Hebrew writings (some 450 authors represented). It is a superior effort over earlier, similar encyclopedias, due to Vincent's access to a the royal library, which was much larger & better than libraries available to other compilers. However, this compilation was more remarkable for its size than for its quality. Vincent did not take the time to assimilate his material into an organic text, instead he quotes from documents available to him without adding anything new or even applying a commentary to explain contradictions. The task was immense, and must have required a long time to compile. Vincent carefully quotes passages and assigns the extracts to their proper authors. During his lifetime Vincent was able to complete all the volumes with the exception of the Speculum Morale, which was written between 1310 and 1325. Yet as it was a part of the original plan, this section has been included in every printed edition of the Speculum Maius.
