David and George Kegley, softcover, first edition, illustrated with numerous photos, charts, and a map, 1971. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. Very good plastic comb binding. The tan-colored wraps are in near fine condition. 11 x 8 ½, 107 pages, 21 ounces. XX [From the introduction] Sometime during the early nineteenth century a large adobe structure was erected on the north side of the Rio Grande three miles downstream from the present town of Presidio, Texas. This building was probably the home of Juan Bustillos until he sold it and some adjacent farm land to an American farmer and trader, Ben Leaton. Leaton and his family repaired and expanded the building in 1848, using it as a fortified residence and trading center until Leaton's death in 1851. Leaton's wife, Juana Pedraza, then managed the estate with the help of her new husband, John Hall, until it was acquired by John Burgess in the early 1860s. The Burgess family lived in the buiIding, making numerous changes and improvements to it, until final abandonment in 1927. In 1936 the state of Texas erected two marble monuments on the site, proclaiming it the approximate location of the Mission del Apostal Santiago, established in 1683; the site of the eighteenth century Spanish Presidio, El Fortin; and the site of nineteenth century Fort Leaton. As will be demonstrated in this report, neither the mission nor the presidio were located on the spot now occupied by Fort Leaton. This does not mean that the structures could not have been in the vicinity, although no archeological survey to date has found concrete evidence for their existence. During the summer of 1969 Illinois State University conducted archeological excavations at Fort Leaton during which time ten of the standing rooms were cleaned out, detailed maps were made of the excavated rooms, and an extensive surface collection was made of the entire terrace upon which the structure rests. In addition, sub-floor tests were made in several rooms in search of earlier floors and walls, a tentative buiIding sequence was worked out based on three types of adobe bricks found in the building, and a preliminary analysis was made of the several thousand artifacts collected during the season. In the preliminary report which followed the author concluded that because of the complete lack of even one artifact dating earlier than about 1820, neither of the two earlier structures could have been located on the site of Fort Leaton. During March and April, 1971, a more extensive excavation was carried out by the Texas Parks and WiIdlife Department. The work was concentrated mainly along the north side of the present standing structure between the building and Farm Road 170.

FORT LIPANTITLAN STATE HISTORIC SITE: NUECES COUNTY, TEXAS, ARCHEOLOGICAL TESTING--1974 (Texas Parks and Wildlife Dept., Historic Sites and Restoration Branch, Archeological Report 16), J. David Ing, softcover, 2-staple binding, illustrations, 1975 [an erratum slip tucked into the booklet indicates that the cover and title page should read ?March 1976?]. BOOK CONDITION: very good. The text block is in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner, but "Texas Historical Commission" is stamped inside the front cover. This is not a public library book nor a remainder, but the word "Library" is printed at the top of the front cover. The wraps are in good condition (some discoloration on front and back covers). 9 x 6, 21 pages, 5 ounces XX [From the introduction] During February 1974, the Historic Sites and Restoration Branch of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department conducted limited archaeological testing at the possible site of Fort Lipantitlan on the Nueces River in northwestern Nueces County, Texas. Since 1936 the site has been marked by a Texas Centennial Commission monument and since 1937 has been maintained as a State Park. Fort Lipantitlan, near the early Texas town of San Patricio, was established by order of Manuel de Mier y Teran as a measure to carry out the provisions of the law of April 6, 1830. The law, initiated by Lucas Alamán, Mexican Minister of Relations, was designed to stop the flood of emigration from the United States to Mexico. [Wikipedia] Fort Lipantitlán (meaning "Lipan land") was conceived about 1825 by José M. J. Carbajal. The site, now in northwestern Nueces County, was that of camping grounds of the Lipan Apache Indians on the west bank of the Nueces River about three miles upstream from the old town of San Patricio, which is on the east side of the river. At the site a number of ancient trails beaten by game animals, Indians, and explorers crossed. An old presidio was also reportedly there as early as 1734 but had completely vanished. Mexican general Manuel de Mier y Terán, acting on the orders to restrict Anglo immigration into Texas, commissioned the fort and placed Capt. Enrique Villareal in command. He served until 1835, when he was relieved by Capt. Nicolás Rodríguez. Author John Linn wrote, "The fort was a simple embankment of earth, lined within by fence-rails to hold the dirt in place, and would have answered tolerably well, perhaps, for a second-rate hog pen." After its construction it was garrisoned with from eighty to 120 men; however, many times the complement was much less. Each of the four parapets was designed for one cannon, but it is doubtful if the fort was ever fully armed. Evidently several buildings and at least one barracks were built surrounding the embankments. James McGloin, in his account of the battle of Lipantitlán (November 4, 1835), makes reference to burning several houses, including a barracks.
