Willem van Irhoven (1698-1760), né à Kessel, étudia à Leyde et devint professeur à Utrecht. il décrit les croyances complexes de l'Ecole de Pythagore où se mêlaient les dogmes orphiques, les traditions orientales et le sabéisme chaldéen. Il traite également du régime alimentaire végétarien ou "diète pythagoricienne" pratiqué par l'Ecole, qui excluait la consommation de viande. Curieux exemplaire dont une page de garde comporte, collée, une grande étiquette imprimée contenant un texte redigé en latin établissant un code pour le bon usage des livres empruntés. Elle a été imprimée vers le milieu du XVIIIs. mesure 15 cm. X 10cm., et porte le titre suivant : "Leges, voluminas ex Bibliotheca nostra commodato accepta, lecturis. Secundum auspicia lata Lictor Lege agito in Legirupionem. Mas vel Foemina fuas, hac tibi lege, Codicis istius usum, non interdicimus". Ce titre est suivi de 15 commandements adressés au lecteur ayant emprunté le livre, et d'où l'humour n'est parfois pas absent. Voici la traduction de quelques unes d'entre elles : n'emporte pas le livre comme si c'était une propriété; ne l'offense pas avec des annotations; ne le déchire ni ne le perfore, ce n'est pas un ennemi; ne le froisse pas; ne le prête pas, ouvertement ou en cachette; éloigne-le de l'eau, de l'huile, du feu, de la saleté; fais fuir les petits voleurs, la souris, la mite, la mouche; une fois lu ne consens pas qu'il reste longtemps avec toi; rends-le en bon état, comme tu l'as pris, etc. A la fin du texte se trouve indiqué le nom du propriétaire du volume : Thomas Vargas Macciucca, duc et chevalier de l'Ordre de Malte. L'idée originale de ces exhortations est due au savant espagnol Manuel Marti (Oropesa, 1663 - Alicante, 1737), bibliothécaire du duc de Medinaceli et bibliophile. Dans une lettre datée de 1723 adressée à son ami l'érudit Mayans y Ciscar, Marti lui communiquait le texte qu'il avait conçu "ad librorum conservationem" et que la présente étiquette reproduit fidèlement avec, comme seule différence, le nom de Thomas Vargas Macciucca remplaçant celui de Manuel Marti. Cette rarissime étiquette tend à prouver que l'initiative de Manuel Marti fut adoptée par certains collectionneurs ou bibliothécaires de son temps, qui reprirent a leur compte son texte en le faisant simplement suivre de leur propre nom.
