The author takes the reader on a journey through a world transformed by technological and social advancements, where cities are gleaming and public spaces are beautifully maintained. The protagonist is struck by the absence of poverty, crime, and environmental degradation, and is introduced to a society that values education and personal development above all else. The book delves into the ethical and philosophical implications of such a society, and challenges the reader to reflect on the values and priorities of their own time. Through the lens of this future society, the book offers a fresh perspective on the challenges and opportunities facing humanity, and inspires contemplation on the potential for human progress. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Pencil marginalia on front endpaper. ; Scarce. 1890 edition of a title first published in 1883. viii, 358 pages. Early maroon cloth boards with gilt lettering and rule on spine. Page dimensions: 164 x 121mm. Page edges sprinkled red. A novel. Utopian fiction. This edition with a 3 page "Preface to the Second Edition" by the author, dated October 8, 1889. "His Utopia, 'The Diothas, or A Far Look Ahead' (1883; variant title 'A Far Look Ahead, or The Diothas' 1890; variant title 'Looking Forward, or The Diothas' 1890), set several millennia hence (almost but not quite in the Far Future), is prolific with suggestions of progress. The narrative describes Television, Computers, sophisticated urban planning that has transformed the New York of the future into a vertical garden, and a car-dominated Transportation system, while presenting a not untypically regimented picture of human relations, as usual more restrictive for women, who, if unmarried, go out only with chaperons. At the same time, all medical doctors are women, and almost all artists; and there are strict controls on the garnering of undue wealth, which may have seem unduly socialistic to Thiusen's contemporary readers." - John Clute, in SFE (The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction), 4th edition, online, accessed January 2024. Running title at head of verso of leaves is "The Diothas ; Or, A Far Look Ahead". Octavo, pp. [i-ii] iii-iv 1-358 [359-360: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], flyleaves at front and rear, original decorated mustard cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black, decorated white endpapers with floral pattern printed in light orange. First edition. American utopia of the far future, a rare precursor of Bellamy's LOOKING BACKWARD (1888). There are close resemblances to Bellamy's utopia and some early critics incorrectly claimed Bellamy plagiarized Macnie's book. In a mesmeric journey to 26th century the hero discovers a highly regulated utopia. "As perhaps the second most important American nineteenth-century ideal society THE DIOTHAS has been examined for connections with Edward Bellamny's LOOKING BACKWARD. There are certain obvious similarities between the two books . But it must also be pointed out that their common ground is general to the utopian tradition, and that Macnie's conservative, puritanical ideal society differs greatly from Bellamy's ideal socialist state. THE DIOTHAS is well written and is very readable, with exposition and story well integrated." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 2166. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1131.
