Born into a prominent Mexican family during the late colonial period, Iturbide was a loyal subject of the Spanish crown. However, after the start of the Mexican War of Independence in 1810, he joined the rebel cause and quickly rose through the ranks. By 1821, Iturbide had become the leader of the Mexican independence movement and was instrumental in negotiating the Treaty of CÃ rdoba that ended the war and established Mexican independence. After independence, Iturbide was elected emperor of Mexico. While his reign lasted only two years, he oversaw the creation of many of Mexico's institutions and symbols of statehood, including its flag and national anthem. Iturbide was overthrown in 1823 by a military coup and was forced into exile. He returned to Mexico in 1824 and was executed by firing squad.
