Disturbance is a novel-in-verse, based on a true story, about a man who kills his wife, son and then himself, leaving a daughter as the family's sole survivor. The story features poems in a kaleidoscope of voices from those involved: from the victims to the killer's relatives to the police investigators touched by the tragedy. There is mystery and intrigue, too: this was a well-to-do, well-connected family, suddenly torn apart by violence. This is a very dark book, but a courageous one, ultimately about evil and its presence in our everyday lives.Ivy Alvarez was born in the Philippines, and grew up in Tasmania. After spells in Scotland and Ireland, she moved to Wales in 2004 and became a British citizen in 2010. Her first collection, Mortal, was published by Red Morning Press in 2006 (ISBN 9780976443926). She recently appeared at the 2013 Oxford Literary Festival, and was a featured writer at the Seoul International Writers Festival. She lives in Cardiff.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Disturbance is a book-length poem by Ivy Alvarez that chronicles a brutal murder case, based on fact, of a multiple-homicide, where an entire family was gunned down by the husband/father. The book features poems in a kaleidoscope of voices from all the characters involved. We first meet the family itself and witness the how the father's controlling attitude gradually escalates into violence. Then we get the aftermath: the authorities, police and neighbours, who all might have helped to prevent this tragedy. This is a very dark book, but a courageous one, ultimately about evil and its presence in our everyday lives. The fact that this family was relatively well-to-do, seemingly prosperous and well-connected, adds another layer of intrigue and mystery. Some graphic violence, but emphasis on character and motivation. Disturbance is a novel in verse by Ivy Alvarez, published by Seren, that chronicles a true-life multiple homicide, a tragic case of domestic violence Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. A collection of creative writing and art about COVID-19 at the onset of the pandemic by people from vulnerable populations. Bringing together artwork, creative nonfiction, fiction, and poetry, Essential Voices shares the perspectives of people from vulnerable populations as they were affected by COVID-19 in 2020, before the release of the vaccine. The pieces in this volume represent a range of writers and artists, some from international locations, whose work may be less likely to be seen because of race, ethnicity, or current legal status. Contributors include individuals who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, or seniors; those who are immunocompromised or undocumented; those working in medicine, food service, factories, and sanitation; and parents who were unable to work from home, along with individuals who were being held in correctional facilities or facing mental health concerns. This multigenre collection preserves the history of the pandemic by documenting and publishing these essential voices. Essential Voices will be of interest to readers who want to consider the diverse lived experiences of people during the pandemic when outcomes were most uncertain. It will also be useful for teachers, students, activists, and policy makers in a variety of settings, including government, hospitals, prisons, homeless shelters, colleges, art schools, and secondary schools.
