Quarter black cloth with grey boards, and a pasted label title to spine. Uncut fore and bottom edge. Wear to extremities, bumping to corners, and wear to label. Internally some spotting throughout, and all six plates present. Hand numbered to verso of half title. Good. A scarce and wonderfully engraved story from the French by Jacques Cazotte, telling the tale of a devil falling in love with a Spaniard, Don Alvaro, and takes the form of a young woman to win his affections.

Stato di conservazione: dorso leggermente brunito, qualche leggero segno del tempo e dell'utilizzo (leggere stropicciature e qualche taglietto marginale) sulla copertina editoriale rilegata all'interno del volume ma, nel complesso, un buon esemplare. Jean Émile Laboureur (1877-1943) est un peintre, dessinateur, graveur, aquafortiste, lithographe et illustrateur français. Auteur de nombreuses gravures au burin, en planches individuelles ou pour des livres, il a illustré près de quatre-vingts livres, souvent d'auteurs contemporains comme André Maurois, Jean Giraudoux, Colette, André Gide, Paul-Jean Toulet, Maurice Maeterlinck ou François Mauriac. Peintre de tableaux de genre, de paysages animés ou non, de natures mortes, il a réalisé aussi quelques fresques et des sculptures. Ses ?uvres sont conservées dans plusieurs musées nationaux et provinciaux.

Book came from the personal collection of Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938) Lady Ottoline Violet Anne Morrell (16 June 1873-21 April 1938) was an English aristocrat and society hostess. Her patronage was influential in literary circles, where she formed friendships with artists and intellectuals including D.H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, Aldous Huxley, Bertrand Russell, and Augustus John. Provenance: Lady Ottoline Morrell (1873-1938); her daughter Julian Vinogradoff (née Morrell, 1906-1989); thence by descent. Book is fair with well marked boards and rubbed edges. Contents good. Unclipped DJ is darkened to the spine, small stain to front panel, book has offsetting to eps but is otherwise clean and bright. 'Recipes' lacks DJ, offsetting o eps, sunned spine but also is clean and bright.both volumes are housed in a card slipcase Xavier Marcel Boulestin (1878-1943) was a restaurateur, chef, and food writer. His London restaurant - The Restaurant Boulestin, was well respected, albeit expensive. Boulestin, who brought French classic food to British cooks became, in a way, a food celebrity. Among those influenced by Boulestin was the English food writer Elizabeth David.

Attractive copy of the irresistibly absurd comedy play, first performed in 1707. Superbly illustrated by J. E. Laboureur.

The original edition of 527 copies was printed in the U.S. by Doubleday Doran. Due to dissatisfaction with the quality, those copies printed for Douglas Cleverdon in the UK were withdrawn, and the approximately 260 odd numbered copies of the British edition were reprinted by Walter Lewis at the Cambridge University Press, of which this is one. All but one of the loose tissue guards present. A very good copy with lightly edgeworn buckram unifornly darkened to near black, boards are moderately soiled and lightly edgeworn, in archival mylar.

No. 353 of a limited edition run of 527 copies. 8vo. This edition was published by Doubleday in the USA, who published the numbered copies 2 to 520 in even numbers. The remaining copies where withdrawn by Douglas Cleverdon and reprinted for him by Walter Lewis. The text of the play herein follows the first edition of 1707 except for the correction of obvious misprints.
