Internally some spotting throughout, and all six plates present. Hand numbered to verso of half title. Good. A scarce and wonderfully engraved story from the French by Jacques Cazotte, telling the tale of a devil falling in love with a Spaniard, Don Alvaro, and takes the form of a young woman to win his affections.

Among those influenced by Boulestin was the English food writer Elizabeth David.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Quarter dark green buckram gilt with grey paper-covered boards, 8vo., xxvii, 127, (1) pages, illustrated with seven engravings on copper by J. E. Laboureur. The original edition of 527 copies was printed in the U.S. by Doubleday Doran. Due to dissatisfaction with the quality, those copies printed for Douglas Cleverdon in the UK were withdrawn, and the approximately 260 odd numbered copies of the British edition were reprinted by Walter Lewis at the Cambridge University Press, of which this is one. All but one of the loose tissue guards present. A very good copy with lightly edgeworn buckram unifornly darkened to near black, boards are moderately soiled and lightly edgeworn, in archival mylar.
