It offers the reader a visual journey through Istanbul and Egypt as seen by early photographers during a pivotal period in both regions' histories. -- The book brings together 216 mid-to-late-nineteenth-century images of two iconic regions of the Ottoman world: Istanbul (then Constantinople) and Egypt. Each plate is reproduced from an original albumen or early gelatin print held in the special-collections department of the Pilsudski Library in Lodz, Poland. The compilers place the pictures in chronological as well as thematic order - panoramic city views, mosque complexes, Bosporus waterfronts, public fountains, diplomatic legations and palaces, urban street life, Nile temples, desert antiquities, and genre scenes of everyday work and leisure.
