Thacker & Co. in 1898, Historical Records of the XIII Madras Infantry, 1776-1896 provides a substantial account of the regiment's origins, campaigns and service over 120 years. Raised by Captain Alcock in 1776 as the 13th Carnatic Battalion, the unit became the 13th Madras Battalion in 1784, before being designated the 13th Regiment of Madras Native Infantry in 1824. Jackson traces its subsequent service through the nineteenth century, supported by named lists of British and Indian officers and ranks, together with extensive documentary appendices. The regiment was later redesignated the 73rd Carnatic Infantry in 1903.At approximately 319 pages, this detailed regimental history combines chronology, personnel records and campaign history to provide an important reference for the study of the Madras Army and its long service in British India.
